Position Summary
The primary responsibility of the Estimator will be to prepare estimates and proposals for the Client’s RFQs. Some jobs will be engineering-only estimates, some fabrication-only estimates, components & parts, and some design-build estimates. The estimates are for industrial modular skids and systems, and the systems have a great deal of steel and/or piping as part of their basis. The estimates are prepared for a wide range of industry sectors. The Estimator will work closely with business development, engineering, project management, and design team for the estimates.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepares estimates utilizing Roeslein Traditional Energy’s proprietary Excel spreadsheets.
- Prepares all proposal documents for all RFQs (proposal, estimate, schedule, clarifications & exceptions, etc.). Estimates and proposals must meet client RFQ requirements for format and content.
- Gathers RFQ and proposal documents and reads and understands the client’s RFQ specifications completely, including bill of materials (BOMs) and drawings. An estimator must fully understand the scope of the RFQ and prepare the Roeslein Traditional Energy’s estimate and proposal to meet it.
- Identifies material requirements (steel, piping, instrumentation, and electrical) by studying the proposals and reviewing BOMs and drawings.
- If BOMs are not provided, the estimator shall prepare BOMs by preparing take-offs, sometimes with the help of other designers.
- Identifies labor requirements and estimates for fabrication by studying the proposals and reviewing or preparing those labor estimates with the manager of operations and engineering managers.
- Sometimes, construction costs must also be analyzed and prepared for Roeslein Traditional Energy to install modules at the site.
- Work closely with purchasing or directly with vendors and manufacturers by specifying materials and receiving accurate quotes for bidding purposes.
- Maintains a log of clarifications and exceptions as discussed between Roeslein Traditional Energy and the client.
- Maintains material and commodities cost database by entering, tracking, and backing up data.
- Develop and maintain relationships with employees at all locations.
- Conduct activities safely and healthily and work in accordance with established safety and company requirements.
- Must follow training and company procedures.
- Must be a leader who represents the organization and can be a liaison to our customers, adhere to company standards, and resolve issues with urgency and professionalism.
- Must follow good housekeeping practices.

- A bachelor’s degree in an industry-related field, such as engineering or construction, is preferred.
- At least three years of professional experience in a technically related field is required.
- Applicable experience estimating industrial solutions or manufactured systems is strongly preferred.
- Must be able to understand and set priorities.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written and excellent presentation skills are required.
- Strong organization, leadership, negotiation, and delegation skills are required.
- Must be able to interact effectively and diplomatically with several diverse people, both individually and within group situations.
- Must be able to develop lasting, positive customer relationships based on customer satisfaction and obtaining customer trust.
- The financial background, including operations budget development, cost control, and capital spending justification, is strongly preferred.
- Specific estimating skills for engineering, mechanical, and electrical manufacturing projects.
- Working knowledge of common scheduling concepts such as resource loading, engineering loading, etc.
- Ability to learn about Roeslein Traditional Energy’s cost accounting system, gross profit targets, standards, policies, procedures, and general business philosophies.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to effectively learn and acquire new knowledge and skills.
- Strong computer skills and an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based programs are required. Specifically, strong skills in the use of MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint.
- Requires effective time management skills, personal conduct, and change management abilities.
Work is performed in an office and in an uncontrolled atmosphere. Exposure to harsh conditions—such as: dust, fumes, chemicals, hazardous materials, noise, and varying weather and temperatures—for short periods of time is possible. All employees are required to follow safety standards and wear all personal protective equipment in designated areas.
