Summary :

The therapist leads the collaboration among an interdisciplinary team to develop, coordinate, and facilitate all direct social services interventions to patients assigned to their caseload and their support systems. The therapist utilizes empirically supported therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or family therapy, to aid in the stabilization and recovery of individuals with mental and behavioral health concerns. The therapist creates a safe and supportive environment where patients gain insight into the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and work towards achieving their goals. The therapist 2 provides training, supervision, guidance, and support to less experienced therapists and student interns, helping them develop their clinical skills and knowledge. Therapist may be responsible for other duties as directed by their manager / clinical operations supervisor to support direct patient care as well as system initiatives. The Therapist will work in an acute care setting that includes inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and / or intensive outpatient services.

Job Duties & Responsibilities :

Conduct individual, group, and family therapy sessions : Providing one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and family therapy sessions to address patients' specific needs and goals.

Assessing patients' needs : Conducting comprehensive assessments to identify patients' mental health concerns, strengths, and challenges.

Developing treatment plans : Creating individualized treatment plans based on patients' needs and goal; provide guidance in the implementation of clinical interventions, including but not limited to facilitating treatment team meetings.

Providing counseling and support : Incorporating evidence-based therapeutic techniques to help patients manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being within sessions and in-the-moment as needed in the milieu.

Educating patients : Teaching patients about their mental health and / or substance use condition, self-care strategies, and treatment options to support patients in reviewing the costs and benefits of treatment engagement and aftercare plans.

Documenting patient progress : Maintaining detailed records of therapy sessions, including patient progress, goals, and interventions. Complete all documentation within required time.

Collaborating with other professionals (both internally and externally) : Working with other members of the treatment team, such as psychiatrists, social workers, and case managers, to coordinate care and ensure optimal outcomes.

Adhering to ethical guidelines : Following ethical codes of conduct and maintaining confidentiality in all interactions with patients.

Continuing education : Participating in ongoing professional development to stay updated on the latest research and best practices in the field of mental health.

Report and document suspected cases of physical, sexual abuse and / or neglect according to the law in the state of employment and according to System policy and procedure.

Conduct self in a professional manner.

  • Receive feedback in a productive manner to further personal & professional development.

Support changes in staffing / scheduling assignment when program and patient care needs require.

Take lead in identifying and owning clinical initiatives, projects, and activities to support system-wide continuous improvement.

Demonstrate understanding of Joint Commission, State, and other regulatory agency compliance regulations.

Provide for patient safety and the safety of the facility.

Complete preceptor training and support onboarding of new staff.

  • This may include, but is not limited to, participating in new staff interviews, being primary preceptor for new therapists, providing education to new Mental Health Technicians (MHTs), Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs), Behavior Specialists (BSs), Case Managers (CMs) and Registered Nurses (RNs), and participating in introductory evaluations.
  • Facilitate and support interdisciplinary and team communication.

  • This may include, but is not limited to, facilitating lunch and learns for all disciplines, facilitate compassion resilience trainings, and ensure therapy staff are attending shift change to provide disciplines with staff updates.
  • Engage in supervisory duties, as applicable.

  • This may include, but is not limited to, supervising master's level interns, providing supervision for MHTs, RNs, BS's, BHTs, or level 1 therapists as assigned, and complete peer fidelity monitoring in the form of documentation audits and direct clinical observations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to : Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols, and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning, and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.

    Physical / Mental Demands :

    Position involves exposure to aggressive / combative patients. Must be able to successfully complete aggression control training.

    Strong interpersonal skills are needed, to maintain professional and assertive communication with patients, support systems, external professionals, colleagues and supervisors.

    Must be able to work independently and complete assignments within specified timeframes.

    Must be highly proficient in verbal and written communication skills.

    Position requires walking, sitting, and standing. Lifting is moderate; must be capable of lifting a minimum of twenty (20) pounds. Reaching, handling, grasping and manual dexterity are necessary to operate various pieces of office equipment. Stooping, bending, kneeling and flexible movements are required to work with orientation equipment.

    Verbal and hearing ability required to interact with patients and employees. Numerical ability required to maintain records and operate a computer.

    Ability to plan, control and direct all aspects of employee relations. Tact required to deal effectively with employees and professional staff. Logical thinking and discretion required to make decisions in initiating and implementing policies and procedures and standards.

    Must be able to read and communicate through written, verbal, and auditory skills and abilities.

    Physically / Mentally able to perform job duties as verified by a physical exam by a licensed physician, according to a post-employment physical.

    Education / Training Requirements :

    Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field, from an accredited school of Social Work, Professional Counseling, or Family Therapy with a minimum of two (2) years' experience in health care and at least two (2) years in a psychiatric setting, preferred.

    Cross-train in minimum two (2) other programs and / or levels of care.

    Full, independent licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or equivalent in state practicing, i.e. LPCC, LMHC.

    If working in a program requiring substance use credentialing, a SAC-IT, SAC, or CSAC is preferred in Wisconsin. A substance use specialty authorization applicable to the state hired in is required.

    Working knowledge of therapeutic intervention and techniques for all age groups, as well as the dynamics of human growth and behavior.

    Required on-the-job Training

    Compliance with Residential Care Center (RCC) and Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF) (Required for Residential Inpatient programs, preferred for all levels of care).

    American Heart Association CPR certification within thirty (30) days of hire. Bi-annual re-certification is required.

    Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within sixty (60) days of hire / transfer. Annual re-certification is required.

    Attend all mandatory in-services and other in-services relevant to the position.

    Be responsible for all educational requirements and related obligations pertaining to the license of the program / unit license regulatory requirements governing the program(s).

    For Residential programs - Must hold a current and active driver's license and be in good standing (preferred for all levels of care).
