Adult Basic Skills Instructor (Adjunct Pool)

This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching in the Adult Basic Skills department. The pool will remain open until June 2025 unless positions are no longer needed. Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be contacted and interviewed as positions become available. 

Instructor provides Adult Basic Skills instruction and GED preparation integrated with life and work skills to students of varying ages.  

Supervision Received
The director, in consultation with the department leads and coordinators is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president. The director confers with the department leads and coordinators in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.
1. Instructs basic skills classes and directs study in an individualized learning lab setting. 
2. Maintains atmosphere that is encouraging and supportive. 
3. Participates as a team member to support student success. 
4. Attends local/state/regional training meetings as recommended by the director, coordinator, or lead instructors. 
5. Familiarizes self with center materials and equipment and is able to recommend appropriate course materials for individual students. 
6. Assists students with learning difficulties and a variety of different learning needs. 
7. Communicates well with a diverse student population. 
8. Assists in student paper work and maintaining accurate records both in student folders and student record sheet notebooks. 
9. Gathers data for TOPS reporting system. 
10. Uses course outlines, appropriate Oregon Adult Basic Skills Learning Standards, as well as TOPS reports and analysis to inform instruction. 
11. Maintains professional manner and appropriate role modeling. 
12. Attends staff meetings as recommended and attends to department and college-wide correspondence through e-mail.  

Education: Bachelor's degree in education or related field is required; Master's degree preferred. 
 
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Experience: Minimum of three years' experience teaching required. Instructional background in developmental reading, writing, and/or math preferred.  

Knowledge of: Adult learning theory; instructional strategies for various audiences; ABE/GED curriculum; learning styles and disabilities; computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, multi-media presentations, spreadsheets and database management; curriculum development; the community colleges' mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs.  

Ability to: Communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Work with non-traditional adult learners as well as teens. 

All ABS employees are required to have a Fingerprint-Based Criminal History Verification submitted to the Oregon Department of Education. This information is then sent to the State Police and FBI for verification. 

Licenses: If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for less than half of the daily work period (about 40%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials less than 5 pounds daily, 5-25 pounds occasionally, and 25-60 pounds rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in an office/classroom environment. The employee is not exposed to hazardous conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and lighting is adequate.  
This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching part-time in the Adult Basic Skills department. The application documents required include a cover letterresume and unofficial transcripts indicating the level of degree earned. Candidates will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree(s) upon hire. Compensation is based on the Rogue Community College 24-25 Adjunct Faculty Salary Schedule.

This pool will remain open until June 2025 unless positions are no longer needed. If at any time you decide that you are no longer interested in being considered, you may log in to the system and withdraw your application from the pool.
