Role:
Leads the Mortgage Services Underwriting Team. Ensures that team members are fully trained on the appropriate product guidelines. Manages the department credit guidelines for both portfolio loans as well as secondary market loans. Demonstrates a high level of knowledge on all secondary market products available, including government loans. Communicates effectively with the entire Mortgage Services Team on all things product related. Maintains high performing service level agreements. Demonstrates daily Rogue's guiding values and service promises.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
25% Develops and maintains portfolio loan guidelines and product eligibility charts across all mortgage and home equity products. Eligibility charts should also be maintained for saleable loans as well. Inter-year proposed guideline changes should be prepared and discussed with the VP of Mortgage Services prior to annual guideline updates.
20% Recruits, hires, coaches all underwriting team members. Training or updates to guidelines or eligibility should be communicated to all production staff in a timely and effective manner.
20% Manages the scenario queue where Mortgage Loan Officers (MLOs) and Residential Loan Advisors (RLA’s) are seeking guidance and potential loan scenarios. This may be delegated to other underwriting team members as time permits.
15% Reviews and approves construction projects on custom construction loans. Budgets should be reviewed for thoroughness and accuracy.
15% Maintains Level 8 Approval Authority and prepares loan submissions for higher level loan committee. Becomes the second signatory on files that exceed the underwriter’s approval level. Recommends changes to approval authority as guidelines come due.
5% Proactively performs other duties as needed or assigned.
Knowledge & Skills:
Experience: Eight to ten years similar or related experience in mortgage lending including approximately two years in a supervisory, lead, and/or managerial capacity. Must have experience in portfolio, government, and FNMA/FHLMC lending.
Education: Some higher education courses or underwriting / risk related courses are beneficial.
Interpersonal Skills: Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is of a personal or sensitive nature. Motivating, influencing, and/or training others is key at this level. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.
Other Skills: Expert level underwriting skills for all loan program types including retail, wholesale or broker. Advanced skills in analyzing lending risk. Excellent judgment and written/verbal communication skills. Ability to read, decipher and interpret regulations and other legal documents. Ability to negotiate and provide solutions. Highly organized and productive. Highly functional with computers, mortgage software, spreadsheets, and word processing software. Advanced skills in leading, training, coaching, mentoring, and motivating. Experience at in-depth planning and implementation of new loan programs. Ability to function as a leader/supervisor, in a team as well as working independently.
Physical Requirements: Some adjusting or moving objects up to 30 pounds in all directions. Must be able to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers while using computer. Communicating with others to exchange information. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discernments in sound. Close and continuous visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
Work Environment: Normal workday with occasional overtime. Employee must be capable of adjusting to unpredictable schedules proactively. As a direct representative of the credit union, the employee must conduct and present themselves courteously and professionally. Exposed to potentially hazardous conditions, i.e., robbery. This job may require working Saturdays or Sundays.
