Job Purpose:
Groundsmen, under the supervision of the superintendent, assistant superintendent or foreman, perform routine manual labor involved in golf course maintenance; do semi-skilled grounds construction and maintenance work; operate small hand-powered equipment; perform work involving large equipment such as tractors, loaders and gang mowers and complete small construction projects. Each groundskeeper may be assigned responsibility for the care and maintenance of several designated holes on the golf course and does related work as required. Landscape or maintain grounds of property using hand or power tools or equipment. Workers typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation.
Tasks:
- Operates vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
- Operates mowers and string trimmers in trimming greens, aprons, tees, around trees, fence lines, banks and hillsides; edges cart paths; edges, rakes and maintains sand bunkers.
- Sets tee markers and cups on greens daily; maintains ball washers; replaces tee towels and flags when needed; removes debris; sands and seeds tee and drop area divots; and cleans flower beds.
- Waters and fertilizes tees, greens and fairways, and under direct supervision of a certified applicator, mixes and sprays chemicals on turf and landscaped areas.
- Cares for established turf by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls.
- Under the direction of the superintendent or assistant superintendent, the groundskeeper marks the course for cart control weekly; moves cart control barriers and replaces worn or lost ropes and signs; and may mark hazard and drop areas.
- Helps in project work; assists in the construction of new greens, tees and fairways; grades and prepares soil base; lays sod; and seeds tees, greens and fairways.
- Mows fairways and roughs with gang units.
- Operates turf vac, skip-loaders, fairway and rough aerifiers and boom sprayers.
- Ensures that the equipment cooling system is working at all times; refills fuel and oil daily; cleans equipment daily, and reports equipment problems or failures to Golf Course Mechanic immediately.
- Provides basic preventive maintenance on equipment as directed by the Golf Course Mechanic or assistant superintendent and returns equipment to the designated location at the maintenance facility.
- Installs forms and lays walks and paths using gravel and asphalt or concrete mixes; excavates and backfills ditches and trenches with hand tools; repairs and replaces pipe on irrigation systems.
- Uses hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge and brush trimmers, and axes.
- Mows greens, tees, aprons, and approaches to greens, and other areas not accessible with gang mowers.
- Aerifies greens; verticuts tees and greens; spikes greens; operates sod cutter, spray rigs for greens and fertilizers spreaders; and mows rough with rotary and reel mowers and operates other equipment as directed.
- Prunes and trim trees, shrubs, and hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
- Gathers and removes litter.
- Maintains and repairs tools, equipment, and structures, such as buildings, fences, and benches, using hand and power tools.
- Waters turf, trees, and plants, using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans.
- Trims and picks flowers, and clean flower beds.
- Rakes, mulch, and composts leaves.
- Follows planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and foliage.
- Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, and shrubs, and apply mulch for protection, using gardening tools.
- Decorates gardens with stones and plants.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
