Job Summary:
The custodian is responsible for maintaining premises and work areas in a clean and orderly manner and performs most assignments under direct supervision with instructions as to the results expected. This position determines methods, procedures, equipment and material, best suited for the operation to be performed.
Responsibilities:
- Perform cleaning and custodial duties in an assigned area including but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing/polishing floors. Operate buffing, floor scrubbing and polishing machines.
- Wash walls, ceilings, floor level windows, window moldings and doors, Venetian blinds. Vacuum, shampoo and spot clean carpets and upholstery. Dust, clean and polish furniture, woodwork, chalkboards, ventilators, and equipment. Clean, disinfect and maintain restrooms, showers and washrooms including replenishing supplies. Empty and clean waste receptacles and dispose of trash.
- Performs special cleaning projects as assigned.
- Comply with Lab implementation of Department of Energy (DOE) health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental-protection policies.
- Perform all work safely and be particularly aware of potentially hazardous operations or conditions.
- Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property. Notify the supervisor and, when appropriate, the building manager or the Environmental Safety Hazards Control Department. Report promptly and correct when appropriate any hazardous conditions that are discovered.
- Proceed with work only after having ensured that appropriate safety procedures have been implemented.
- Plan work with full consideration to safety.
- Ensure that all unique activities that involve potentially hazardous conditions are carried out in conformance with current Lab safety policies and procedures to ensure that risks are acceptable.
- Keep operating and quality-assurance records, such as daily log book and equipment entries.
· Demonstrated related - qualifications acquired either in a formal apprenticeship, or directly-related vocational training or equivalent work experience.
· Ability to communicate (read, write, speak) in English. Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary for the role and scope of work performed. Ability to communicate clearly in writing, orally, over the telephone and by two-way radio with Supervisor, work leads, peers, and customers regarding work assignments/safety issues.
· Ability to follow oral and written policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to read and comply with posted safety warnings.
· Demonstrated ability to use computers and applicable software effectively for record-keeping and communication.
· Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under fluorescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, have manual dexterity in both hands; lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted to chest height and carry object up to 100 feet up/down stairs. Ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).

· Excellent customer service skills and ability to promote customer relations through partnering with
