Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Food Service Worker position assists with the preparation of meals. At times, supervision of kitchen activities may be delegated to the Food Service Worker. The Food Service Worker will ensure all aspects of the food service operation performed during their shift, including but not limited to, food preparation, serving meals, cleaning, and maintenance of food service area/equipment as well as record keeping where required during their shift. This is a full-time position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follow established schedules in cooking, baking, sanitation, and related activities.
- Use standard food preparation utensils and equipment.
- Utilize food, ingredients and other consumables as determined by menus and estimated number of diners.
- Apply consistent standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standard and kitchen rules, policies, and procedures.
- Receive and organize all in-kind donations.
- Clean and sanitize all food preparation equipment and reports food preparation issues or equipment malfunctions to the Kitchen Manager and Culinary Lead.
- Demonstrate a consistent effort to improve food preparation and provide quality customer service.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in staff training and development activities as directed.
- Performs other duties assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- A high school diploma or GED and one or more years’ experience in hospitality, food services, or human service field is required. Prior experience working with homeless populations and experience working in a homeless shelter are preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Cook in a hospitality environment.
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment, safe food handling, and safe transit practices.
- Skill required to: prepare, transport meals; safely operate agency vans; effectively interact with diverse populations.
- Clean driving record and North Carolina driver’s license.
- Current Serve-Safe Certification or must obtain within six months of hire
- Must have reliable transportation to work.
- Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Requires working nontraditional hours and the ability to carry out duties with minimal direct supervision. Requires much physical movement, ability to carry food service containers, and ability to work with volunteers.
