SUMMARY
Under general supervision, participates in assessing the needs of individual students and developing an individual education program to meet each need. Facilitates individual and group meetings to provide counseling and develop behavioral and social skills.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Participates in referral, assessment, and re-evaluation meetings to assist in assessing individual student’s educational status and identifying their needs.
- Collaborates with other educators regarding student performance, progress, and limitations.
- Facilitates individual and group session with students to provide counseling and develop social, coping, self-regulation, crisis intervention, and problem solving skills.
- Assists with functional behavior assessments and the development of behavior intervention plans; identifies behavioral goals for individual education programs (IEPs) and develops strategic interventions.
- Provides staff with essential information to better understand factors affecting a student’s performance and behaviors.
- Participates as part of a Transition Team to plan for student needs during transitions.
- Networks and collaborates with community professionals regarding student issues.
- Utilizes family, school, and community resources to enable students to learn as effectively as possible in his/her educational program.
- Identifies, provides, and facilitates workshops, resources, and meetings for parents of students with special needs.
- Maintains accurate records and documents; maintains confidentiality student records and information in accordance with established regulations, laws and policies.
- Supports the relationship between the Minot Public School District and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, visitors, and District staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and District information; follows compliance rules governing child abuse; performs related duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Bachelor’s Degree in social work or related field; AND three (3) years of previous social worker experience preferably within a school setting; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must pass a thorough background investigation.
Knowledge of:
- Department policies and procedures.
- Federal, State, and local ordinances, statute, rules, and codes.
- Record keeping and file maintenance principles and procedures.
- Safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
- Current trends and best practices in social work and special education.
- Various assessment and instruction methods.
- Special education laws and regulations.
Skill in:
- Assisting children and special needs students, and assessing educational needs.
- Maintaining composure, and working effectively in classroom and school facility environments.
- Dealing tactfully and courteously with students, using patience, understanding, and caring.
- Facilitating individual and group instructions.
- Following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Planning and managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
- Maintaining confidentiality of student records and personal information.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must be a licensed Social Worker; a valid North Dakota State Driver’s License may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in MPS schools and facilities, and requires working with children; work involves intense concentration on activities taking place around one’s location on a constant basis throughout the entire work day; may be required to physically restrain students if they are at risk of hurting themselves or others.
