Job Overview:
Roots Nature School is seeking a passionate, creative, and nurturing Early Childhood Teacher to join our small, Waldorf-inspired school community. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage young children in a holistic and creative educational environment. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to fostering social-emotional wellness, promoting a love for the arts, and encouraging hands-on exploration through nature, gardening, and sensory-based learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development & Instruction:
- Follow and implement a Waldorf-inspired curriculum that nurtures the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young children.
- Incorporate creative arts (painting, drawing, music, storytelling, and crafts) as core components of daily activities.
- Lead outdoor lessons and activities related to gardening, nature studies, and seasonal changes to enhance students' connection to the earth.
- Social-Emotional Wellness:
- Create a safe, supportive, and empathetic classroom environment where each child’s emotional needs are met.
- Foster a sense of community and cooperation by guiding children in conflict resolution and emotional regulation.
- Encourage mindfulness practices, storytelling, and rituals that support emotional growth and self-awareness.
- Nature and Gardening Focus:
- Develop and oversee the school’s garden program, involving children in planting, harvesting, and caring for plants and vegetables.
- Use nature-based activities to teach respect for the environment and encourage curiosity about the natural world.
- Organize regular outdoor excursions or nature walks to further enrich the students’ learning experience.
- Classroom Management & Environment:
- Maintain a warm, welcoming, and orderly classroom that reflects Waldorf principles, with an emphasis on natural materials and a homelike atmosphere.
- Provide individualized support to each child as needed to help them succeed in their personal and academic development.
- Foster a strong sense of community and collaboration among parents, caregivers, and staff to support the child’s overall well-being.
- Assessment & Documentation:
- Observe and document children’s growth and development in all areas (social, emotional, physical, cognitive).
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding their child’s progress, milestones, and areas of growth.
- Prepare end-of-year evaluations and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
- Collaboration & Professional Development:
- Work closely with other teachers and staff to create a harmonious school culture.
- Participate in regular team meetings, workshops, and ongoing professional development to deepen understanding of Waldorf education and best practices in early childhood development.
Qualifications:
- Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field. Waldorf Early Childhood Certification or interest in pursuing certification is preferred.
- Experience: At least 2 years of experience teaching in an early childhood setting, preferably in a Waldorf or Waldorf-inspired environment.
- Skills & Attributes:
- A deep love for children and a commitment to fostering creativity and emotional intelligence.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially in working with children and their families.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge and experience in gardening, nature-based learning, or willingness to learn.
- A flexible, patient, and calm demeanor, with a focus on nurturing the whole child.
