Billing assistant
2 year billing experience for family practice and urgent care ideal, but willing to train for right person with other medical billing experience with excellent customer service and critical thinking skills.
4-hour days 4 days weekly. Some increase in hours for project work as needed.
Salary $22p/h to $28p/h based on experience.
JOB OVERVIEW: Works in collaboration with and support of Billing Administrator. Maintains a foundational knowledge of CPT and ICD Coding Guidelines. Maintains functional knowledge of Practice Management and EHR software specific to billing functions. Proficient to navigate payer websites and other electronic systems associated to job functions. Requires the ability to recognize, define and solve problems using analytical and critical thinking skills. Requires ability to maintain data accuracy and follow through. Requires professionalism and high level of customer service.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follow HIPPA guidelines, including PHI safeguards.
Maintain patient confidentiality
Research eligibility issues as related to claim submission or denials.
Identify correct insurance, verify eligibility, affect insurance package and other demographic changes in Practice Management (PM) software as required.
Contact patients as needed for current insurance information.
Annotate patient demographic record with pertinent information
Perform payment resolution activities.
Initiate or assist with insurance claim rejections, denials, and appeals.
Navigate One Health Port, Availity, Optum, Molina and other payer sites to affect appeals and reconsiderations.
Complete forms and submit documentation as required.
Contact payers as required.
Respond to patient or payer inquiries.
Assist with accounts receivable.
Work insurance and patient aging reports.
Follow up on unpaid claims.
Follow up on patient accounts that have reached collections status.
Manage overpayments, voids, transfers, adjustments, write-offs, and other transactions as appropriate.
Assist with overpayments report and patient refund requests.
Develop and maintain skillset to analyze claims on hold and affect resolution.
All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Certification and Licensure:
High School Diploma
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of Medical Office experience required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Basic understanding of medical terminology.
Excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Knowledge of Practice Management and Electronic Health Record software.
Ability to effectively interact with physicians, patients, and other staff members.
Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or pressured situation.
Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing.
Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to respond to verbal questions.
Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
Other: Requires occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Requires exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
