Job Description: D-Level Special Education ACCESS Program Teacher
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Current New Mexico Public Education Department PK-12 Special Education license.
Position Summary: The D-Level Special Education ACCESS Program Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with moderate to severe disabilities. This role involves developing individualized education programs (IEPs), implementing evidence-based interventions, and collaborating with support staff, families, and other educators to support student success in academic, social-emotional, and functional skills.
Reports To: Principal/Special Education Director
Primary Responsibilities:
- Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Design and implement individualized lesson plans tailored to students with varying disabilities, ensuring alignment with IEP goals.
- Utilize differentiated instruction techniques to meet diverse learning needs.
- Incorporate assistive technology and adaptive materials to enhance student learning.
- Modify general education curriculum to provide access to grade-level content.
- Behavioral & Social-Emotional Support
- Develop and implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) using positive behavior support strategies.
- Provide direct instruction in social-emotional skills, communication, and life skills.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies when necessary.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with general education teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals to support inclusive practices.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings, providing data-driven recommendations for services and accommodations.
- Assessment & Compliance
- Conduct assessments to evaluate student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
- Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with federal and state special education regulations.
- Ensure that IEPs are developed, implemented, and reviewed within legal timelines.
- Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of special education laws (IDEA, ADA, Section 504).
- Proficiency in developing and implementing IEPs.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Effective classroom management and behavior intervention skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, move, and assist students with physical disabilities, including transferring students in and out of wheelchairs or other mobility devices.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, and standing to engage with students at their level.
- Ability to perform tasks that require physical endurance, such as assisting students during physical activities or adaptive physical education.
- May involve assisting students with feeding, hygiene, and toileting needs as required by their IEPs.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations, including using crisis intervention techniques if necessary.
Work Environment:
- Classroom setting with adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
- May require working in multiple environments, including inclusion classrooms, therapy rooms, and community settings.
