Position Title: People Safety Specialist 

Reports to: Director of People Safety

We have an opening for a People Safety Specialist.  In this role you will be responsible for implementing, and monitoring safety programs and policies to ensure a safe working environment for employees. The primary focus is on preventing accidents, injuries, and occupational hazards by identifying and mitigating risks. The Safety Specialist will collaborate with various departments to promote a culture of safety and compliance with relevant regulations. The Safety Specialist plays a crucial role in fostering a secure workplace, conducting training sessions, and investigating incidents to improve overall safety performance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Risk Assessment: Identify potential hazards in the manufacturing process, machinery, equipment, and work environment. Conduct regular risk assessments to determine potential safety issues. 

Safety Policies and Procedures: Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures tailored to the manufacturing industry. Ensure that all employees are aware of and trained in these policies. 

Compliance: Stay up-to-date with local, state, and federal safety regulations relevant to the manufacturing sector. Ensure that the facility complies with all applicable laws and standards. 

Training: Provide safety training programs for employees, including new hires and ongoing training sessions. Topics may include proper equipment usage, emergency procedures, chemical safety, and ergonomics. 

Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, injuries, or near misses to determine their root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. 

Safety Equipment and PPE: Assess the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment in the manufacturing facility. Ensure that appropriate equipment is provided and used correctly. 

Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency response plans for various scenarios, such as fires, chemical spills, or medical emergencies. Conduct drills to ensure that employees are prepared to respond effectively. 

Safety Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of the manufacturing facility to identify potential hazards, compliance issues, and areas for improvement. 

Safety Culture: Promote a culture of safety throughout the organization, encouraging all employees to prioritize safety in their daily tasks and decisions. 

Continuous Improvement: Regularly review and update safety policies, procedures, and practices to reflect best practices and address emerging risks in the manufacturing industry. 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 

Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field. 

Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent preferred. 

OSHA 30 certification a plus. 

Proven experience in occupational health and safety roles. 

In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and best practices. 

Experience with LOTO requirements and program implementation. 

Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

Analytical and problem-solving abilities. 

Ability to work collaboratively and influence change within an organization. 

Experience in food manufacturing is a plus.
