The Weld Engineer is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and implementation of welding processes in manufacturing operations. This role involves ensuring the quality, efficiency, and safety of welding operations, troubleshooting welding issues, and continuously improving welding techniques. The Weld Engineer will work closely with production teams, quality assurance, and maintenance to ensure welding operations meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company goals.


Key Responsibilities:


Welding Process Design and Development:

  • Develop and implement welding processes for new and existing products.
  • Select appropriate welding methods (MIG, TIG, Stick, etc.) and equipment for specific applications.
  • Evaluate welding materials, consumables, and techniques to ensure product integrity.
  • Design welding fixtures and jigs to improve production efficiency and quality.


Welding Quality Control and Testing:

  • Monitor and evaluate welding procedures to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Perform or coordinate destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) of welded joints (e.g., ultrasonic, x-ray, visual inspections).
  • Review and interpret welding inspection results to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure that welded products meet industry standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, ISO) and client specifications.


Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve welding-related issues during production.
  • Investigate and address weld defects, such as porosity, cracking, and incomplete fusion.
  • Collaborate with production teams to solve welding-related challenges and improve processes.


Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS):

  • Develop, review, and update Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) in compliance with customer and industry requirements.
  • Ensure proper documentation of welding procedures and techniques for future reference.
  • Conduct training for production staff on WPS guidelines and best practices.


Training and Support:

  • Provide technical support and training to welders, operators, and other team members.
  • Conduct hands-on training to ensure that welding practices follow safe and efficient procedures.
  • Evaluate and recommend welding equipment and tools based on job requirements.


Safety and Compliance:

  • Promote safe welding practices in the workplace in accordance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.
  • Ensure welders are properly equipped with safety gear and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with environmental regulations regarding fume extraction and waste disposal.


Cost Management and Efficiency:

  • Monitor welding processes to reduce waste, downtime, and production costs.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase productivity and reduce cost per weld.
  • Work with the production team to optimize material usage and minimize defects.


Collaboration with Other Departments:

  • Work closely with design, engineering, and production teams to ensure product designs are feasible for welding.
  • Provide input on design modifications to improve manufacturability and weldability.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to schedule regular upkeep and troubleshooting of welding equipment.


Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of welding activities, procedures, and test results.
  • Prepare reports on welding process performance, including quality audits and process improvements.
  • Ensure proper documentation of welding certifications, materials, and equipment.


Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Certification in welding (e.g., AWS Certified Welding Engineer, ASME) is highly preferred.
  • Experience:
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in welding engineering or a related field, with a strong understanding of welding processes and materials.
  • Experience with welding equipment, techniques, and quality control measures.
  • Knowledge of industry standards (e.g., AWS, ASME, ISO) and regulations.
  • Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot welding defects.
  • Proficient in the use of welding software and equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding inspection techniques and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing or industrial setting, which may involve exposure to heat, noise, and other environmental conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time and work in tight or awkward spaces.


Work Environment:

The role typically operates in a manufacturing or industrial setting. Weld Engineers may be required to work in both office and production areas, and may occasionally be involved in hands-on testing and troubleshooting on the shop floor.
