THERAPIST 1 Job Description   Reports to : Clinical Director JOB SUMMARY The Therapist 1 will hold a level 1 license and is responsible for providing confidential addiction and / or mental health counseling, education and support to individuals, families, and the community, and for promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy choices. Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, the Therapist 1 will provide substance use and / or mental health services including, but not limited to, assessment, group, individual, and family sessions, and other modalities to clients and their families according to demonstrated competence. DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Assessing clients using psychometric screeners or other evidence-based assessment tools (i.e., BAM, Kessler-10, PHQ-9, GAD-7, etc.)  and diagnosing clients for substance use and / or mental health disorders using the most updated Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM). Obtaining previous records that are relevant to the current treatment episode. Collaborating with the client in order to develop a written treatment plan that is individualized, client-centered, and recovery oriented and includes goals and measurable objectives. Providing counseling services specified in the client ’s treatment plan. Reviewing clients throughout the treatment episode according to ASAM criteria, to determine the need for continued services or discharge / transfer. Reviewing and, where necessary, revising the counseling portion of the client treatment plan to address emerging problems. Developing the client discharge / transfer plans to ensure movement to the appropriate levels of care are successful. Facilitating individual, group, and psychoeducational sessions with clients and / or family members, in accordance with state regulations and Joint Commission standards. Contacting referral sources, providing case consultation and coordination with referral sources. Participating as a member of a multidisciplinary team for assigned clients. Providing active case consultation. Documenting all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals and follow-up in the client's medical record, and providing appropriate signatures and dating of such entries, including those made in electronic records. Performs other duties as assigned by Clinical Director / Executive Director. JOB TYPE & SCHEDULE Part-Time (on-site) / Non-exempt Monday - Thursday  4pm - 10pm (with some flexibility) QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree required in social work, counseling, psychology, or other human services field. LPC or LSW required; CADC preferred. At least 1 year of experience in substance use and / or mental health treatment required. Experience with startup organizations is preferred. COMPETENCIES Clinical expertise : the Therapist 1 must be competent in assessing, diagnosing, providing, and documenting appropriate clinical care in an outpatient substance use and / or mental health treatment center. Emergency and safety : understand and follow facility emergency and safety procedures, respond to emergencies in a safe and effective manner, provide first aid and CPR as needed, and maintain a safe and secure environment for clients and staff. Overdose prevention : all staff need to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of an overdose and respond appropriately and need to be trained in the use of naloxone and other overdose reversal medications. Suicide risk and prevention : All staff need to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide risk and respond appropriately and need to be trained in suicide prevention strategies. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and EXPERIENCE Cultural Competency : The Therapist 1 must be able to understand and work effectively with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. They must be aware of the unique challenges and strengths of each culture, and they must be able to adapt their approach to meet the needs of their clients. Communication Skills : The Therapist 1 must be able to effectively communicate with clients, both verbally and in writing. They must be able to listen actively, ask open-ended questions, and provide clear and concise feedback. Problem-Solving Skills : The Therapist 1 must be able to identify and solve problems that arise in the treatment process. They must be able to think critically and creatively, and they must be able to develop and implement effective solutions. Organizational Skills : The Therapist 1 must be able to effectively manage their time and resources. They must be able to maintain a caseload, meet with clients, and complete paperwork. Flexibility : The Therapist 1 must be able to adapt to change. They must be able to adjust their approach to treatment as needed, and they must be able to handle unexpected situations. Self-Awareness : The Therapist 1 must be aware of their own biases and limitations. They must be able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and they must be able to use this knowledge to improve their practice. Empathy : The Therapist 1 must be able to understand and empathize with their clients. They must be able to see the world from their clients' perspective, and they must be able to offer support and understanding. Respect : The Therapist 1 must respect their clients' unique experiences and perspectives. They must be able to treat their clients with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. Professionalism : The Therapist 1 must maintain a professional demeanor at all times. They must dress and behave in a way that is appropriate for a professional setting, and they must uphold the ethical standards of their profession. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to walk up and down stairs during emergency drills or situations.
