Hiring for Night Position 

General Description:

The primary purpose of this job position is to assist with the direct care and service delivery, including, but not limited to assisting with the administration of prescribed medications to residents and maintaining medical records under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, taking vital signs and assisting with indirect care and service delivery required in the routine operations of the nursing department, such as compliance and quality audits and other processes related to general operations.                                                                                                                

Training/Education/Licensure/Skills or Proficiency Requirements:

Excellent verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are essential in this highly collaborative, team-oriented environment and with this position, requiring communication with residents and other members of the care team to deliver excellent care and service with the organization/community.

Qualified candidates will have completed a certified Nursing Assistant Training program by the Department of Health and Senior Services, as well as a Certified Medication Assistant program, as evidenced by the listing on the Iowa’s Nurse Aide Registry or documentation of successful completion of competency and skills tests from an approved testing agency. Experience providing care and services in long term care or equivalent healthcare experience

Current, valid certification as a Certified Medication Aide in the State of Iowa.

Functional literacy in written and spoken English.

Personal:

Professional appearance and demeanor, including complying with the dress code and name tag. Must successfully complete required pre-employment evaluation, physical and background check. Must have the physical ability to perform job-related duties, which require:

  • Stand/walk on the tile and/or carpet 95% of the time
  • Sit, various chairs 5% of time
  • Pushing up to 25 pounds exertion
  • Lifting over 100 pounds maximum with additional person, medical assist equipment-including Hoyer lift available.
  • Bending, kneeling, crouch, stooping, stretching, pulling, and transferring.

Primary responsibilities:

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment.

Provide/assist with the direct and indirect resident care as needed to ensure that an adequate number of appropriately trained professional staff are on duty at all times to meet the needs of residents.

Ensure the residents receive care in a manner and an environment that maintains or enhances their quality of life, ensuring safety and resident rights.

Specific duties of the position include:

Administers prescribed medications to residents and maintains related medical records under the supervision of licensed nurse.

General Duty:

  1. Verifies identity of resident receiving medications and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on specific forms or records.
  2. Presents medication to resident and observes ingestion or other application, or administers medication, using specified procedures.
  3. Takes vital signs or observes resident to detect response to specified types of medications as appropriate to the individual medication administered, notifies the licensed nurse of any vital signs outside normal parameters, shortness of breath, rash, swelling, nausea/vomiting, responsiveness.
  4. Documents reasons medications are not administered and informs licensed nurse.
  5. Gives direct resident care, such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with examinations and treatments, as requested and particularly when needs related to nursing assistant/CNA call-ins/off occur.
  6. Observes and verbally reports to the charge nurse accurate and timely information concerning assigned residents, such as a change in medical condition or health status, lack of response or resistance to care, special problems, unusual incidents, residents needs or requests, behavioral or psychological concerns; documents in writing according to established procedures or as requested.
  7. Complies with the resident’s care plan in the performance of Restorative Rehabilitation, Range of motion, or periods of exercise as ordered by the physician, P.T., etc.
  8. Documents according to established policies and procedure the care and resident’s response or lack of response to that care.
  9. Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of residents, documents according to established procedures.
  10. Responds to inappropriate or abnormal behaviors by residents in a manner consistent with the care plan or established procedures, and safeguards resident’s rights.
  11. Listens to residents and family’s questions and complaints and responds in a calm, concerned manner, controlling emotions such as anger and frustration, reports to charge nurse in a timely manner.
  12. Accepts responsibility for the safety of residents under his/her supervision.
  13. Receives, investigates and resolves or reports to higher authority concerns from residents/families in accordance with positive customer relations principles
  14. Follows Infection Control and Prevention policies, procedures, and practices.

Maintains and enhance knowledge and skills by completing annual in-service requirements and staff development and other training to complete the re-certification and education required by Division of Health and Senior Services and other state and federal laws and regulations.

Maintain current knowledge of and adherence to all applicable policies and procedures established by Rotary Senior Living.

Promote teamwork, mutual respect, excellence, trust, and effective communication.

Observes all safety precautions, including but not limited to OSHA requirements, safe lifting, and fall prevention practices, life safety precautions and participates in Fire and Emergency disaster drills being aware of limitations and asking for assistance when needed.

 Environmental/Occupational Exposures:

Individuals must be able to use protective equipment and take proper precautions and emergency measures.

Is considered at risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens, infections and infectious waste, and minimal hazards re; chemicals used for cleaning/sanitizing/disinfecting.
