What are the responsibilities and job description for the CDL Bus Driver - West position at Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA?
General Function:
The bus driver position is a key role at the YMCA. Driver is to provide safe transportation, according to YMCA policies and procedures and state laws, to and from the YMCA for all YMCA members, participants and YMCA staff.
Know How:
Incumbent must pass YMCA background checks and successfully complete and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or the ability to acquire them within 30 days of employment. If serving in the childcare department, the YMCA Bus Driver must know the needs and interest of school aged children, discipline policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing the program of the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA. Additional trainings will be provided through the YMCA to include: Driver Safety, Defensive Driving, Child Abuse Prevention, Anti-Harassment for Everyone, Portable Fire Extinguisher, Social Media & Digital Communication, Blood Borne Pathogen, and more.
Purpose & Objectives:
Each person is employed a as staff member because the administration feels he/she will conscientiously assist in the fulfillment of the YMCA’s mission in childcare by:
- Have a valid driver's license with a clear driving record. Full-size bus requires a CDL with passenger endorsement.
- Arrive on time to work in proper attire.
- Complete thorough before and after trip checks each day and record all information on designated forms.
- Record gas level, mileage, and maintenance needs on designated forms.
- Clean out bus each day. Be responsible for final check of the vehicle to ensure that all riders have vacated.
- Promote safety at all times by keeping first aid supplies fully stocked.
- Ensure that bus rules are announced and followed by all riders.
- Comply with all emergency procedures appropriate to the bus and in conformity with procedures adopted by emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of the children and staff.
- Give primary consideration to the health and well-being of everyone in the program.
- Maintain positive relations with youth, adults/guardians, and others staff members.
- Provide leadership and guidance for all participants and fellow staff members, as needed/requested.
- Know the procedures for locating a missing child, member or participant from a bus trip.
- Know the procedures for caring for an injured rider while on the bus trip.
- Display willingness, once consulted, to work in an activity other than his/her assignment in order to ensure the safety of riders.
- Practice personal cleanliness and neatness.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances. If an incident occurs while on-duty, driver must be able to adjust and act accordingly for the safety and benefit of the participants.

The driver is responsible for ensuring the transportation of YMCA members, participants and staff is done with the utmost safety and diligence.
