The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1753, with the Sheriff as the only officer. The Sheriff’s Office now consists of a total of 207 employees that provide professional law enforcement to the citizens of Rowan County. During 2003, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the J. Stannard Baker Award, a national award for outstanding achievement in highway safety.
The Rowan County Detention Center is a 210 bed, direct supervision facility made up primarily of dormitory style housing units. The Rowan County Detention Center Annex facility can house an additional 160 inmates. The annex facility is comprised of four (4) 40 -inmate dormitories. Both facilities are self-sufficient operations consisting of housing, food service and laundry facilities that maintain a high level of service on a daily basis.
The Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the position of PT Deputy. This position conducts investigations of crimes and crime scenes; responds to calls for police service, which may include emergencies, natural disasters, and domestic calls; serves summons, subpoenas and related legal papers as required; patrols a designated area within Rowan County to prevent violations of laws and ordinances and prevent breaches of the peace or offenses against persons and property; responds to the orders or assignments of supervisors and helps maintain proper discipline within the Sheriff's Office; provides security for inmates, court officials, jurors, witnesses and others; and serves in a continuous on-call status due to the nature of the work.
Requires high school diploma, completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), minimum age of 20, favorable psychological evaluation, background investigation, CVSA, successful completion of physical fitness assessment, favorable completion of medical examination with negative drug screen, and a valid North Carolina driver’s license are required. An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
