Position Summary:

Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) of Rowan University invites applications for the position of Department Head, Department of Clinical Sciences to join our new veterinary program and teaching hospital. The selected candidate will be integral in the development and growth of the Department within our veterinary teaching hospital, currently under construction in Harrison Township, NJ.

Reporting to the Dean, the successful candidate will oversee the department and provide clinical oversight for the teaching hospital. The Department Head will oversee all operations of the Department of Clinical Sciences, including budgetary oversight, providing supervision, guidance, and mentorship to faculty in small and large animal clinical sciences, management of day-to-day operations, and development short and long-term operational plans for the Department. In conjunction with the Director of Veterinary Medical Services, the Department Head, will be actively involved in fostering a positive and collaborative culture, while ensuring high standard of veterinary education as well as patient and client care.

SSVM is both a new veterinary school and start-up clinical practice. The hospital facility is slated to open in the Fall of 2025. The services offered within the hospital will include primary care, emergency care (24/7), and specialty care. Planned specialties include anesthesiology, cardiology, critical care, dermatology, dentistry, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, and surgery. In addition to the small animal teaching hospital, our large animal field service provides ambulatory care, and our shelter medicine and community outreach service is partnered with the Gloucester County Animal Shelter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of faculty and staff of the department including mentoring in support of the department teaching, service, and research initiatives.
  • Aids in recruitment, orientation, and integration of new faculty.
  • Make informed, documented recommendations concerning faculty retention, promotion and tenure.
  • Performance management of faculty, providing a regular cadence of one-on-one meetings for support, feedback and coaching and completion of yearly faculty reviews.
  • Oversee clinical faculty scheduling, including management of leave requests.
  • Develop plans for the growth of the department to ensure department meets professional standards and follows best practices in each academic/clinical discipline.
  • Represent the department to other units of the university and to School administration.
  • Coordinates departmental activities related to departmental websites, program marketing, and other school events.
  • Attend and participate in hospital leadership meetings to support the operational needs and financial goals of the hospital.
  • Foster a collaborative and professional environment.
  • Oversee the development of hospital policies and protocols in collaboration with the Section Heads and Director of Veterinary Medical Services, focusing on high standards of care in the hospital and optimizing workflow.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Veterinary Medical Services, drafts and administers the department’s budget, provides good stewardship of department resources, monitors and tracks expenditures.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Veterinary Medical Services, ensures appropriate clinician staffing in for both service and teaching needs of the hospital and ambulatory practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent.
  • New Jersey veterinary license (or obtained prior to start date).
  • Minimum five years of work experience in veterinary education and/or administration documenting excellence in leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and a demonstrated ability to work with colleagues, technical and professional staff in a collegial and respectful manner.
  • Record of teaching, service, and scholarship commensurate with for appointment at the Associate or full Professor level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS, MBA, and/or PhD).
  • Board certification in a specialty recognized by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Glassboro, New Jersey west campus, 22 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine plans to admit its first class of DVM students in 2025. Facilities will include an academic teaching facility aimed at the delivery of pre-clinical training, a small animal teaching hospital, and a research facility.
