Beginning School

The Beginning School division serves students in preschool and Kindergarten. We build safe, joyful, and connected classroom communities. We teach young children HOW to think, not merely WHAT to think. We teach the whole child, offering children opportunities to engage using their hands, bodies, hearts, and minds. Through our rich and integrated curriculum, we encourage children to see themselves as artists, engineers, mathematicians, scientists, and authors. Authentic assessment strategies allow teachers to understand and support each child’s development and learning. Classroom schedules allow for longer periods of exploration and plenty of time learning and playing outdoors. In addition to the NAIS accreditation maintained by the whole school, the Beginning School is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Position Summary

The Beginning School seeks an Assistant Teacher to join a 4PreK classroom. The Assistant Teacher collaborates with the lead teacher in creating a warm, joyful and organized classroom community, establishing routines and building relationships with children and families.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the lead teacher in planning, execution, and assessment of the curriculum.
• Collaborates with the Student Support Team (Principal, Emotional Support Counselor, Director of Learning Services, Learning Specialist) to support each child and collaborate with families. 
• Under the guidance of the lead teacher, conducts activities with large and small groups of children, or with individuals. 
• Uses positive guidance, offering children plenty of helpful feedback, and exhibiting patience, empathy, and respect.
• Collaborates with the lead teacher in the assessment of learners, as well as preparation for parent-teacher conferences and other communications on students’ learning.
• Shares in the work of the classroom including copying, taking attendance, preparing materials, tidying, plant and pet care, etc.
• Shares in the work of the Beginning School including dish clean up, compost care, activity rotation, etc. 
• Engages in the professional learning community at Rowland Hall by attending all required meetings, attending workshops/conferences to improve practice, participating in the process of teacher evaluation in collaboration with the Beginning School and Lower School Assistant Principal.
• Know and follow all school policies and procedures, and contribute to the maintenance of the school’s accreditations (NAIS, NWAIS, NAEYC).

Skills and Requirements

• A love of and deep respect for young children as learners and people, through difficult and joyful moments alike
• Cultural competency both in and outside of the classroom
• Knowledge of developmentally-appropriate practices with young learners
• Flexibility and readiness to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and demands on attention 
• Proficient computer skills as well as strong oral and solid written communication skills
• An openness to making mistakes and trying new things 
• Good cheer, humor, and warmth, balanced by professionalism and sound judgment
• A Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field is required. 
• Successful teaching experience with young children is preferred. 
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Facility with Google suite, iOS

Additional Information

This is a full time exempt position, reporting to the Beginning School Principal. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2025.
