Position Summary
The Art Teacher plays an important role in the SummerWorks program, inspiring creativity and engagement through daily arts and crafts activities for campers of all ages. This position is responsible for planning and leading art projects, organizing and maintaining supplies, and collaborating with the SummerWorks Administrative Team to create age-appropriate activities. The Art Teacher also provides support to counselors, helps manage camper behavior, and occasionally communicates with parents. This role requires strong organizational skills, initiative, enthusiasm, and the ability to foster a positive and inclusive environment where campers can explore their creativity while developing confidence and artistic skills.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Art Activity Planning & Facilitation
- Develop and lead engaging, age-appropriate arts and crafts activities for campers
- Collaborate with administration and age group leads to design weekly art programming
- Co-facilitate activities with counselors, providing guidance and support as needed
- Make productive use of time between groups by preparing activity setups in advance, organizing supplies, and maintaining a well-stocked inventory of materials
Camper Support
- Clearly communicate behavior expectations and safety guidelines to campers before each activity
- Assist counselors in managing camper behavior and creating a positive, supportive environment.
Staff Collaboration & Supervision
- Provide direction to counselors and interns who assist with art activities.
- Address staff concerns professionally and promptly (within 24 hours), offering guidance and support.
- Communicate staffing challenges or concerns to the Director and Assistant Director of SummerWorks as needed.
- Serve as a positive role model for staff by demonstrating professionalism, creativity, and leadership.
Staff Training & Development
- Actively participate in staff training sessions and weekly team meetings.
- Assist in planning and delivering training to ensure counselors feel confident in supporting art activities.
Skills and Requirements
- Some college or college degree preferred; diverse backgrounds and experiences are valued
- CPR certification required (training provided)
- Desire to work with a diverse group of children and adults at summer camp
- Previous experience teaching arts and crafts with children or youth
- Creativity, enthusiasm, and passion to teach arts and crafts to children of all ages
- Demonstrates patience, integrity, and can be a role model
- Effective communication skills and ability to work as a team player
- Open to personal growth and willing to help others grow
- Ability to sustain positive relationships with children and adults
- Ability to plan, lead, and supervise activities
- Ability to provide support and leadership to 2-4 peer counselors
- Work experience in a camp or childcare setting
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills

- Work comfortably and effectively in outdoor environments, including direct sunlight and varying temperatures.
- Move easily around classrooms, the Rowland Hall McCarthey campus, and off-site locations for field trips to support various activities
- Contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of the SummerWorks program
- Lift up to 10 lbs of boxes to prepare/clean up from activities
- communicate appropriately and effectively with constituents, including students, families, and colleagues
Additional Information
This is a seasonal, non-exempt position. SummerWorks has mandatory paid staff training on June 5, 6, & 7, 2025. Our Camp season begins on Monday, June 9, 2025, and ends on Friday, August 8; camp staff work 8:10 am-4 pm daily. There will be no camp on June 19, July 4, and July 24 & 25. CPR and First Aid certification is required. SummerWorks offers CPR and First Aid training prior to the start of camp.
