Policy Interpretation and Implementation
Purpose 1. To organize, plan, and facilitate an activity program by providing an opportunity for entertainment, exercise, relaxation, and expression. This fulfills the basic recreational, social, and spiritual needs of each resident to promote overall wellness of the residents within our community.
Reports to 2. This position reports to the Administrator. Works in coordination with Business
Office and other department managers.

Description a. Duties and responsibilities:
1.Performs the completion of a resident assessment profile upon admission of each resident and updates yearly or upon change of status, to identify activity preferences as well as to compile base criteria for the development of a program of activities to meet the resident’s needs.
2. Creates a monthly calendar of activities and events that will be centrally posted in the facility on the first of each month. A copy of the monthly calendar is also provided to each resident.
3. Makes necessary purchases for activities based upon monthly department budget.
4. Maintains record of expenditures by providing receipts for immediate reimbursement.
5. Maintains record of assessments and attendance at activities.
6. Maintains inventory records and is responsible for activity supplies and equipment.
7. Conducts regular scheduled exercise sessions. These should be conducted by the activity director or an outside resource.
8. Conducts Arts and Craft Activities, led by the Activity Director or an outside resource.
9. Facilitate special programs and events (lectures, concerts, pet therapy, etc.).
10. Facilitate the scheduling of assigned leaders for special activities during the weekends and after normal business hours during the week.
11. Coordinate the attendance of residents and families at all special events involving dietary that are planned for residents; coordinate event in conjunction with the Dining Services Coordinator.
12. Organize activity programs for all major holidays including the attendance.
13. Due to the nature of these events, the activity coordinator and/or activity personnel is required to work these holiday events for the duration of the schedule event/program, unless the Administrator grants special permission.
14. Coordinates and leads the monthly Resident’s Council, including the recording of minutes of the meeting and submit to the Administrator.
15. Publication and distribution of a monthly newsletter for residents, families, staff, and the community.
16. Conduct activities with the knowledge and consideration of cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity among residents.
17. Conduct activities that will promote community wellness.
18. Plan and coordinate one “special” trip weekly for residents, except during weeks that “special” in-house activity has been organized.
19. Plan and coordinate movie in-house events to be shown during weekends, such as Saturday and Sunday evenings. Assign a weekend staff member to lead the activity.
20. Assist with the development and implementation of community marketing plan and providing input into the yearly budget process.
21. Coordinate volunteer program, beauty shop, resident shopping, van schedule, resident appointment schedules, and outings.
22. Assist in mealtime activities, including escorting residents to the dining room.
23. Assist in escorting resident on recreational trips. Facilitates resident shopping as needed.
24. Obtain necessary information from resident medical records and will uphold HIPPA rules and regulations during access to these files.
25. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control policy and procedures by following and adhering to infection control practices.
26. Attends and participates in the QI program committee meetings as requested.
27. Works effectively within a team member setting.
28. Performs all other duties as assigned, as this organization expects employees to promote an atmosphere of teamwork with other associates as well as hospitality and comfort for its residents. Therefore the list of duties indicated above, are not all-inclusive. b. Working conditions:
29. An assigned location will be designated for the majority of activities and job related tasks.
30. Position will have an office space.
31. Exposure risk for residents with communicable diseases and/or confused residents that may become physically aggressive/combative.
32. This position is at risk for exposure to blood and bodily fluids due to assistance that may be necessary in providing activities to our residents.
Essential infection control measures should be implemented at all times for preventative measures by maintaining a box of gloves in designated area. c. Educational requirements:
33. Must possess the ability to communication verbally, with the ability to read, write, and understand English.
34. High school diploma or equivalent of a GED is required.
35. College degree in Liberal Arts, Human Services, Recreational Therapy or Music Therapy is a plus.
36. Completion of the North Carolina state approved course for Activity
Director or willingness to complete within 6 months of hire.
37. General knowledge of the regulatory requirements for an activity program. d. Experience:
38. One year experience in a social or recreational program.
39. Experience working with volunteers and ability to organize and develop volunteer programs.
40. Minimum of one year working with the aging population.
e. Specific requirements:
41. Excel in organizational planning and facilitation of events.
42. Genuine interest and caring for the aging and disabled individuals.
43. Outstanding interpersonal skills with high level of energy and enthusiasm.
44. Must have a 2-step PPD for screening of Tuberculosis; submit a copy of the 1st step results on the first day of orientation.
45. Successful completion of a drug screening and a clear criminal record.
46. Must be able to work Monday through Friday. Participation and ensuring appropriate staffing in bad weather situations. Ability to participate in quarterly family events and holiday activities. Participates in staff appreciation events in conjunction with department managers.
4. Physical and sensory requirements:
47. Moderate physical activity.
48. Ability to regularly lift, pull, push, or move up to 50 lbs., with occasions of lifting up to 100 lbs., and spending long periods of time sitting, walking, and standing.
49. Must be able to lift, stand, carry, bend, squat, reach, and kneel using proper body mechanics.
50. Must be in good health and demonstrate emotional stability in order to cope with physical, emotional, and mental stress of the position.
51. Assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
52. Function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and supporting agencies.
53. Meet general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which may include a mental and physical examination.
54. Relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile individuals within the facility.
55. Orientation to include 6-hours of Dementia training. Completion of total 20-hour Dementia training within 6 months of hire.
5. Acknowledgments:
56. Encourage residents, families, volunteers, and other social groups to participate in the activity program within the community.
6. Job position analysis information:
57. Attendance of required facility meetings and training, including participation in weekly stand-up meetings scheduled. Completion of continuing education requirements per calendar year related to ALF and activities.
Task Evaluation 7. Job performance evaluation will be conducted in 90 days after hire date and annually performance and competency evaluations thereafter.
