Summary: The Mechanical Department is responsible for all maintenance and upkeep of the railroad’s fleet of 23 railcars as well as buildings/grounds. The railcar maintenance team will use hand tools, power tools, plumbing and cutting equipment and measuring instruments; may be called upon to operate forklifts and Genie lifts.
Essential Functions
· Work under Interior Railcar Foreman in performing a maintenance program for the rolling stock fleet of 23 pieces of equipment
· Perform daily inspection of passenger train and perform work order repairs as necessary
· Perform railcar overhauls that can include a combination of framing, woodworking, plumbing, flooring and basic metalwork
· Address maintenance calls to the company’s buildings including main offices, ticket office, out buildings, as well as upkeep on our railroad maintenance facility
· Audit shop equipment for potential repairs
· Trouble shoot equipment needed to complete jobs
· Create and facilitate projects to completion including any related paperwork or service reports
· Communicate plans and projects effectively to other team members
· Safely use rigging and lifting equipment
· Maintain the highest standards concerning quality of workmanship and safe work performance
· Maintain clean work practices and understand the effects of dirt and debris
· Understand and adhere to our safety culture
· Demonstrate a willingness to work with other shop leads as well as other departments within the company
· Actively participate in safety meetings
· Provide daily progress updates to Interior Railcar Foreman
· Other duties as assigned by supervisors or management
Education/Minimum Requirements
· High School diploma or equivalent
· 3 years in the construction industry preferred
Knowledge
· Experience in such areas as: Wood-working & Plumbing
· Able to operate fork lifts, big and small
· Proficient in layout, fit-up and fabrication
· Have a demonstrated ability to perform light machining, utilizing drills, taps, etc
Working Conditions/Essential Job Functions
· Fluency in English
· Regular exposure to extreme temperatures
· Heavy lifting – up to 75 lbs
· Work in elevated position, climbing, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling
· Position will spend 80% of work time on feet
