DIRECTOR OF ACTIVITIES
Function:
The primary function of the Director of Activities is to develop and conduct an activity program for all residents, which is designed to make life more meaningful, to stimulate and support physical and mental capabilities to the fullest extent and to enable the resident to maintain the highest attainable social, physical and emotional functioning as possible. The Director of Activities reports to and is directly responsible to the Administrator.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certified Therapist, Two years experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, one year of which was full-time in a resident activities program in a health care setting or;
Be an Occupational Therapist, Art Therapist, Music Therapist, Dance Therapist, Recreational Therapist or;
- Ability to read, speak and understand English
- Ability to plan, direct and conduct the activity program to meet the individual needs of the residents
- Possess enthusiasm as well as creative and motivational abilities
- Ability to recruit and direct a volunteer program
- Ability to conduct programs within the activity department budget
- Ability to follow directions and complete assigned responsibilities
- Communication and organizational skills
- Possess enthusiasm, creativity, and motivational abilities
- Ability to perform tasks and responsibilities without direct supervision
- Maintain a neat, clean, well-groomed appearance

Specific Responsibilities:
- Design, direct, and conduct an activity program designed to meet the physical, mental and psychosocial well-being of each resident, in accordance with the comprehensive assessment of the resident
- Include residents in planning of activity program of their choice and in the implementation of the programs
- Design an activity program consisting of individual, small and large group activities to meet the needs of the resident which include, but are not limited to:
- Social activities
- Indoor and out door activities
- Events and outings off of facility property
- Religious programs
- Creative activities
- Educational activities
- Coordinate the activity schedule with other resident services
- Provide a varied program of activities each day, including weekend and evening activities
- Develop and implement activities for residents who unable to leave their rooms
- Maintain a current list of residents who are not physically capable of participating in activities
- Develop and post the monthly activity schedule conspicuously, in large visible print, for residents and staff
- Develop and maintain contact with community agencies and resources
- Recruit, train, direct and supervise volunteers to participate in activity programs
- Schedule regular community speakers, performers, organizations, etc. to participate in activity programs
- Maintain current record of participation for each individual resident, per federal and state regulations
- Document on the resident’s plan of care all identified activity choices and needs, with appropriate approaches and time measurable goals
- Participate in Interdisciplinary Care Plan Conferences
- Interview and hire Activity Assistants, providing instruction, supervision, and direction
- Request and maintain activity supplies and equipment
- Keep activity department and supplies clean, organized and securely stored
- Participate in infection control policies and procedures of the department and facility
- Practice safety policies and procedures of the department and facility
- Attend in-service education and staff meetings as required
- Be courteous, considerate and cooperative when communicating with all facility staff, residents and public
- Promote and maintain good public relations on behalf of the facility
- Perform any and all other duties as may be assigned by the Administrator
