Description:
The Rio Rancho Observer is seeking a general news reporter. This weekly print product with a 24/7 online presence covers the communities of Rio Rancho, Corrales, Bernalillo, Santa Ana Pueblo and Placitas in southern Sandoval County, New Mexico, which is a vital part of the Albuquerque metro area.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will possess strong, clear and clean writing skills. They will have the ability to communicate with the public in an impartial manner as well as the ability to shift from standard news reporting to feature writing. Strong copy editing, AP Stylebook knowledge, photo and video skills are a plus. Reporters will be asked to produce a minimum of two pieces of original content per day as well as process press releases as needed. They will also be expected to prepare advanced pieces for the weekend. The candidate should be able to quickly turn around articles and content for publication in a fast-paced environment. They should also be able to look at data and analytics to help determine content. Knowledge and/or experience with journalism ethics and standards is key. Some weekend and night hours will be required for this position.
Strong candidates will be self-starters, team players and have the ability to juggle a variety of tasks. They will need to be able to develop relationships with sources for their assigned beats and have the initiative to follow up on story leads.
Experience with word processing software, Microsoft Office, web publishing software and Adobe Suite (particularly InDesign and Photoshop) are a plus, as is experience with social media. This position also requires a valid driver’s license, safe driving record and reliable transportation.
