Position Summary

RSI is recruiting for an Ecologist II who will act as the Office of Legacy Management Pollinator SME, and Ecology point of contact for multiple western LM sites.

Location(s): Grand Junction, CO
Status: Full-Time
FLSA: Exempt
Hiring Range: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year. (The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

This position is required to travel 50-75% of the time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, performs ecosystem assessments and studies the ecological impact of environmental management at restoration and remediation sites.
• Inventories and maps ecological resources, describes their current condition, determines potential for restoration and develops implementation goals.
• Participates in project planning, development of implementation plans, and design of monitoring programs to evaluate the success of the restoration.
• Participates in and/or organizes field activities involving data collection, sampling and performing surveys.
• Studies wildlife, pollinators, and vegetation in impacted areas by performing activities such as large mammal surveys, breeding bird surveys, wildlife depredation surveys, pollinator diversity snapshot inventories, long-term vegetation monitoring, and re-vegetation studies; identifies genus and species of plants.
• Produces technical reports and papers, including data management, data summary, data analysis, and production of figures and graphics, that explain the project and describe results.
• Assist in evaluating data, reviewing reports, and writing reports.
• Participates in and/or develops educational outreach activities, such as presentations and site tours.
• Promotes fieldworker safety and may conduct training.
• Direct work activities of field personnel and interns.
• Train and mentor more junior staff.
• Conduct work according to approved work plans, ensuring procedures are followed.
• Work with office personnel in planning field activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Ecology or related biological science.
• 3 years of relevant experience.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid Driver’s License.
• No professional certification required.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Ability to identify plants at the genus and species level.
• Ability to navigate a dichotomous key to identify insects, specifically pollinators.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• Ability to work in the field, traveling 50-75% of the time, with winters generally in the office.
• Broad understanding of principles, concepts and techniques in ecology.
• Skill and ability to perform complex tasks independently with little instruction.
• Broad knowledge of trade techniques and practices, using independent judgment and ingenuity.
• Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
• Skill and ability to perform mechanical and operational technical tasks associated with weed control.

Essential Physical Requirements 

Medium: Work involves moving objects by exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an above-negligible amount and up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
