Overview :
The RTI International seeks a prospect for the Bio-oil Upgrading Internship within the Technical Advancement and Commercialization (TAC) business unit.
This internship is a contract position. The employment contract is administered by Greene Resources Powered by Array, RTIs supplemental staffing partner.
TAC provides scientific and engineering solutions for challenging problems existing in the fields of health, environment, and energy. In TAC, applied research and development, along with prototyping and scale-up activities, are concentrated in numerous research and application labs, as well as in a pilot plant facility located on RTIs main campus in Research Triangle Park, NC. TACs Sustainable Energy Solutions team consists of experienced research engineers and scientists support applied R&D activities for developing advanced, low-carbon energy solutions for a sustainable future. Our current portfolio of projects supports technology development for advanced biofuels and bioproducts, chemical storage of renewable energy, carbon capture and utilization, and technology assessments for greenhouse gas mitigation.
The intern will perform bio-oil upgrading experiments using existing equipment in RTI laboratories. Bio-oil samples will be hydrotreated in a high temperature high pressure batch reactor system. The pyrolysis liquids will be mixed with selected catalysts in a Parr reactor and heated to 200-300C in high pressure hydrogen. Upgraded products will be analyzed using existing analytical equipment.
Responsibilities :
- Planning, coordinating, and executing an experimental plan focused on upgrading at least 5 different biomass-derived liquids at defined process conditions with selected catalysts.
- Data analysis for providing results and conclusions in written summary reports.
- Conduct laboratory R&D according to provided safe operating procedures.

Additional Information
This in-person paid internship will take place from September 2024 through January 2025. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 30 -40 hours per week.
