Career Advisor - Oakland
The Career Advisor assists program participants with the process of making informed career decisions leading to full-time employment at the regional self-sufficiency standard. This includes helping them choose a career and identify a pathway to career-oriented employment. This can happen early in an individual’s program or after employment has stabilized. This involves working with a variety of career assessment tools and personality inventories and engaging in occupational exploration and planning exercises through group and individualized services. Based on the knowledge and information obtained in the Pathways planning process, and with 1:1 counseling from a Career Advisor, the participant selects one or more of three possible pathways: Career/Vocational Training, Career/Education, and/or Career/Entrepreneurship. The Career Advisor may also supervise a small team of Employment Coaches.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Program/Site Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assessments and Goal Setting: Review employment, educational and training backgrounds with program participants, administer and interpret standardized career assessments and personality inventories and from these, help participants develop their career goals.
- Partnerships: Build and maintain robust partnerships with organizations offering degrees, credentials, and/or skills training for competitive employment in the local labor market as well as coordinate transitional employment opportunities. This includes evaluating and monitoring training, education and entrepreneurial programs for relevancy and effectiveness and acting as liaison between these providers, program staff and participants, as necessary.
- Career Planning and Guidance: Help participants identify pathways to career-oriented employment at or above the self-sufficiency wage standard and help them select, and apply for educational, vocational or entrepreneurial training opportunities.
- Coaching: Provide individual coaching and conduct group workshops in furtherance of individual participant career needs. (The ability and willingness to deliver honest, productive feedback and to motivate will be critical to effectiveness).
- Team leader: Provide leadership and support to Employment Coaches: supervise 1-2 Employment Coaches and monitor performance. Provide training, coaching and skill development in the following areas: job search skills, adherence to policies and procedures, ECM and other data and document collection processes.
COMPETENCIES
- Comprehensive career advising/coaching experience and expertise; Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) or Nationally Certified Counselor certification highly desirable.
- Active listening, critical thinking, and the ability to Inspire and motivate others.
- Teamwork, interpersonal flexibility, excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Skillful teamwork and leadership; solid organizational abilities; excellent oral and written communication.
- Technology: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Knowledge of computerized career assessments and software and experience with online LMI resources preferred.

- If you don’t currently possess our organizational core competencies of Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, and Coaching, Rubicon provides training.
This position requires the incumbent to travel to Rubicon meetings and partner sites. If the candidate opts to meet these travel requirements by driving, proof of a valid and current driver license, current auto insurance, and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report are required.
- COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- $26-$30 DOE.
