Job Summary
The Alcohol and Drug Counselor provides individual and group counseling, assessment, education, and support to individuals with substance use disorders. The counselor collaborates with clients to develop personalized treatment plans, encourages recovery-oriented goals, and supports clients in achieving sobriety and wellness. This role also involves case coordination and referral to community resources as needed.
Key Responsibilities: Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and substance use evaluations to determine client needs.
Develop individualized treatment and recovery plans in collaboration with clients.
Provide individual, group, and family counseling sessions using evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT, MI, etc).
Facilitate educational sessions on substance use, relapse prevention, coping skills, and life skills.
Monitor client progress and make appropriate modifications to treatment plans.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with licensing and funding requirements.
Coordinate care and referrals with medical providers, case managers, peer support specialists, and other service partners.
Participate in clinical staffing, supervision, and continuing education as required.
Support crisis intervention efforts and assist in treatment planning for high-risk clients.
Provide culturally competent services and advocate for client recovery in a nonjudgmental and trauma-informed manner.
Qualifications:Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Addiction Studies, Psychology, Social Work, or related field. Master’s preferred.
ADC/ AADC preferred
Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of experience in substance use counseling or a behavioral health setting preferred.
Skills:
Knowledge of addiction treatment models and recovery supports
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards
Experience working with diverse populations and co-occurring disorders
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with electronic health records (EHR)
Familiarity with trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing
