HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR
Mountainview Behavioral Hospital located on the campus of Runnells Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare is currently seeking a Hospital Administrator for their forty-four bed Behavioral Hospital.
DEFINITION:
Under the immediate direction of an appointing authority or governing board, administers, directs, and coordinates all activities of a hospital in order to carry out its objectives as to the care of the sick and/or injured, furtherance of scientific knowledge in the medical and health care fields, and participation in promotion of community health; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Hospital Administrators have overall charge of an institution and coordinate all of its activities. They see that all of the hospital's objectives are carried out. They are responsible for developing an effective team of health care and ancillary personnel and for seeing that adequate support services, facilities, equipment, and staff are provided. They are also responsible for seeing that the hospital provides to the community adequate health services programs. Hospital Administrators have the traditional management responsibilities of planning and coordinating departmental activities, personnel, purchasing, budgeting, budget preparation and control, quality assurance, patient services and public relations activities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Is responsible for the operation of the hospital, for the application and implementation of
established policies, and for liaison among the governing authority, the medical staff, and the departments of the hospital.
Organizes the functions of the hospital through appropriate departmentalization and the delegation of duties.
Establishes formal means of accountability from those to whom he has assigned duties. Regularly.
Schedules inter-departmental and departmental meeting, where appropriate, to maintain liaison between the medical staff and other departments.
Names appropriate departmental representatives to the multi-disciplinary committee of the hospital.
Prepares reports for, and attends meetings with the governing authority regarding the total
activities of the institution as well as developments, which affect health care.
Provides for personnel policies and practices that adequately support sound patient care and maintain accurate and complete personnel records.
Reviews and acts upon the reports of authorized inspecting agencies.
Implements the control and effective utilization of the physical and financial resources of the hospital.
Employs a system of responsible accounting, including budget and internal controls.
Reviews and evaluates existing policies, procedures, and work methods by means of periodic and special studies and directs installation of improved work methods and procedures to ensure achievement of objectives of program.
Coordinates and integrates the functional phase of total hospital program.
Develops standards and methods for measurement of hospital activities.
Interprets and transmits policies to medical staff and personnel and ensures compliance with policies.
Prepares yearly budget for control of expenditures, based upon past experience, knowledge of market trends, and other financial considerations.
Prepares periodic reports concerning various phases of hospital operation and its financial
condition.
Meets with department heads to coordinate their activities and formulate program of the hospital.
Acts as liaison between medical staff and appointing authority and/or governing board in matters of professional care and treatment of patients.
Determines that care of patients is of highest professional level and meets with standards
prescribed by accrediting agencies.
Provides for an administrative management organization, including budget and finance, personnel, purchase and supply, building and grounds maintenance, and housekeeping, and integrates these services with clinical phases of patient care.
Meets with department heads to solve administrative problems, and may supervise directly one or more hospital departments.
Coordinates activities of hospital staff to prevent overlapping or duplication of functions,
responsibilities or supervision.
Cooperates with other health, hospital, and social agencies in an effort to increase hospital
services to community.
Provides for general administrative services including mail, files, stenographic, messenger,
transportation, reception, and information and operation of communication systems such as telephone switchboard, inter-communications, and teletype.
Directs the establishment and maintenance of records and files.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possession of a master's degree in Hospital Administration or Health Care Administration or
Public Health or Health Services Administration or Health Sciences or Business Administration or
Public Administration plus five years of administrative experience in the management and
supervision of various departments in a hospital or other health care facility.
OR
Graduation from a four-year course at an accredited college or university plus six years of
administrative experience in the management and supervision of various departments in a hospital or other health care facility.
NOTE: Applicants who do not meet the above educational requirement may substitute
additional administrative experience in the management and supervision of various departments in a hospital or other health care facility on a year for year basis.
KNOWLEDGE
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of hospital organization and administration, standards and regulations of hospitals, and the laws applicable to hospital operations.
ABILITY
Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
Ability to accept responsibility for activities of the hospital where inefficiency may result in serious consequences to patients.
