JOB SUMMARY: Assist in the coordination of the Resilient Alaska Youth (RAY) AmeriCorps and Tobacco Prevention Youth Engagement programs, which support adult and youth leaders in communities across Alaska as they promote youth resiliency and reduce substance/tobacco use through positive youth development, peer mentoring and youth engagement in health education and policy issues. Coordinator roles will include: support to AmeriCorps members serving youth in rural Alaska; support to youth peer leaders; training event coordination; program compliance; development of resource materials, training modules and webinars; implementation of community planning, data collection and evaluation tools; and possible site visits to rural communities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Resilient Alaska Youth (RAY) AmeriCorps Program
Program Description: RurAL CAP’s Resilient Alaskan Youth (RAY) AmeriCorps Program addresses rural Alaska’s high rates of youth substance abuse and suicide through the cultivation of resiliency, supportive relationships, and positive cultural identity. RAY AmeriCorps members are recruited locally from up to 20 rural communities each year. They support positive youth development through planning and implementing afterschool activities and skill-building curriculum. Activities may include engaging youth in traditional subsistence food practices, cultural activities, community-based service projects and other learning experiences to build protective factors and promote overall wellness and cultural connectivity.
- Supports the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator with recruitment and on-boarding of RAY AmeriCorps members. Creates recruitment and promotional materials as needed for recruitment and member support.
- Ensures AmeriCorps member and site compliance with all applicable policies and procedures, including data collection and reporting.
- Assists in the Orientation and In-Service Training for members; including planning, logistics, agenda, material production and preparation.
- Provides technical support to AmeriCorps members on youth engagement and fosters a strong community service ethic. Possible travel to AmeriCorps member sites to provide support, as needed.
- Works with RAY members, community leaders, program staff and funding sources to publicize and promote program activities and accomplishments.
- Coordinates the purchasing and distribution of program supplies, materials, and equipment; and program travel and logistical arrangements.
- Follows project specific records management program for filling, protection and retrieval of records; and to assure compliance with program and other requirements.
Tobacco Prevention Youth Engagement Program
Program Description: In partnership with the State of Alaska, Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPC), RurAL CAP’s Youth Tobacco Prevention program focuses on positive youth development as a strategy to reduce tobacco use among youth. It recruits, trains and supports a statewide youth group (YEAH – Youth Encouraging Alaskans Health) which promotes leadership skills, peer to peer education and youth engagement in health education and policy issues. In addition, the program provides TPC grantees, regional wellness coalitions and other partners with training and technical assistance on youth engagement best practices to develop their expertise and skills in positive youth development.
- Assists the Wellness Coordinator in recruiting, training and supporting a statewide youth group (YEAH) focused on leadership development and health issues which impact and interest them. Assist in providing individual guidance to youth group members, monthly teleconferences, training events and resources. Support youth group members in developing their interest and engagement in public health.
- Supports the YEAH youth group and Wellness Coordinator in planning an annual conference on youth leadership in health education and policy. Promote participation by youth across the state. Assist with conference logistics.
- Teams with the Wellness Coordinator in partnering with other youth engagement programs to organize joint training events on topics that support youth leadership development and skills necessary to engage youth in health programs and policies.
- Works with Wellness Coordinator to strengthen youth engagement in regional and statewide wellness coalitions. Identify and address barriers to youth engagement in wellness coalitions. Develop opportunities to support youth in providing feedback to coalitions on their youth-related goals and outreach activities.
- Assists Wellness Coordinator in identifying, developing and implementing assessments and toolkits to guide TPC grantees and other community organizations in assessing readiness to support youth engagement and develop action plans to deepen their agency’s knowledge and participation in positive youth development principles.
General Duties
- Contributes to progress reports and responds to requests for information on project activities. Participates in data collection, outcome measure reporting and program evaluation.
- Participates in weekly staff meetings, regular supervisory meetings and all required training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time 40-hour position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or hours vary with location. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
TRAVEL:
Regular travel is primarily local during the business day, as well as overnight trips to rural Alaska possible.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRED EDUCATION:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- State and federal background checks, including fingerprints, required.
- Bachelor’s degree plus one year, or five years qualifying experience in non-profit program management, rural community development, or related fields.
- Responsible work ethic with reliable attendance.
- Proven ability and willingness to be self-directed in problem solving and decision-making and perform basic assignment with little or no direct supervision while also working effectively as a team member.
- Demonstrated intermediate level of computer skills necessary in order to use and create documents and reports, spreadsheets, workshop materials and slide presentations, and to enter data into intricate database programs and proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook.
- Must keep all matters concerning participants in strictest confidence as required by HIPAA privacy and the 42 CFR, Part II confidentiality regulations.
- Must be able to provide own transportation to meet work schedule requirements.
