What are the responsibilities and job description for the Registered Nurse Pre-Op/PACU position at Rush Oak Brook Surgery Center?
Basic Function:
The staff nurse is responsible for providing therapeutic, effective patient/family-centered care according to physician order, in compliance with the philosophy of the Organization, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies.
Working Relations
Position reports to: CLINICAL Manager
Position supervises: None
Internal relationships: As a representative of the Organization all comments, attitudes, actions and behaviors have a direct effect on the Organization’s image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, families, physicians, referral services, affiliating schools, visitors, volunteers, coworkers, supervisors, venders, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork in line with Organization standards and guidelines to promote positive relationships and excellent patient care.
Position Requirements
Licenses or Certificates: Current nursing licensure in the state in which the Organization is located. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course. Current ACLS certification.
Total education, vocational training and experience: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. At least one year of PREOP and PACU nursing and/or critical care experience and/or emergency room experience.

18. Participates in inventory count.
19. Assists with housekeeping tasks.
20. Receives and documents physician orders.
21. Is knowledgeable about Medical staff privileges.
22. Is knowledgeable about response to emergency situations (i.e., cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia, drug reactions, fire, etc.)
23. Performs all duties assigned by supervisor.
24. Participates in the Organization Quality Improvement process and activities including the areas of safety, infection control, patient education, teaching, documentation, adherence to guidelines for cleaning/decontamination of the center, adherence to guidelines for sterilization of instruments and supplies, patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, compliance with OSHA standards and risk management.
25. Demonstrates competency in performing job task and operating equipment on an annual basis.
26. Possesses clinical skills necessary to provide quality care to all patient age populations from pediatric to geriatric patients.
Specific Duties:
1. Checks updated schedule each morning and prepares room supplies and equipment.
2. Checks and documents defibrillator and laryngoscope functions each morning.
3. Admits patient according to procedure.
4. Administers and charts medications as ordered by physician.
5. Reinforces and clarifies physician instructions and explanation of procedures to patient.
6. Provides nursing care and appropriate monitoring according to policies and procedures.
7. Communicates relevant information to physician, Administrator, and appropriate staff.
8. Provides for patient safety by use of monitors, side rails, and assistance in ambulating and instruction on the use of call bell in bathroom.
9. Completes Pre-operative and Recovery Room charting.
10. Reviews written post-operative instructions with patient and/or family member.
11. Completes inventory sheet.
12. Provides emergency care according to physician and administrative policy.
13. Discharges patient upon order of anesthesiologist and/or attending physician accordance with procedure.
14. Arranges transfer of patient to hospital, as needed, according to procedure as ordered by physicians.
15. Sets priorities to facilitate the flow of patient efficiently.
16. Cleans equipment according to procedure.
17. Assists with pre-operative and post-operative calls.
18. Reviews charts for completeness and signatures of physicians.
19. Prepares and restocks area for following day.
20. Checks inventory and notifies appropriate staff member to re-order.
21. Notifies appropriate staff member to order non-drug supplies.
22. Assists with cleaning of recovery room according to policies and procedures.
23. Initiates appropriate infection control measures.

15. Analyzes nursing care provided in the Organization related to the established standards of care.
16. Participates in the monitoring and evaluation of nursing care provided.
17. Demonstrates ability to coordinate the nursing care provided in the Organization.
18. Assigns patient care responsibilities based on patient needs and abilities of available staff.
19. Assumes charge nurse responsibility as assigned.
20. Demonstrates ability to make decisions concerning Organization based problems.
21. Participates on quality council to facilitate improvement of nursing care and achievement of the mission of the Organization, as requested.

Attendance

Machines/equipment used: Clinical equipment used for patient care, i.e., suction machine, defibrillator, patient lift, IV pumps, accuchek. Office equipment: Computer, Copy machine, Telephone, Facsimile.
Environmental conditions: Indoors in climate controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant t odors, to blood and body fluids which may carry infection, to infectious disease and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.
Physical requirements: Good visual acuity, accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape. Ability to speak and hear.
Degree of supervision provided to position: Minimal, must be self directed and able to work independently.
