The Deputy Medical Examiner (DME) investigates and reports on the cause and manner of deaths, including the gathering of physical evidence, interviewing, assisting in post-mortem examinations; determines if a case falls under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's Office; and performs related work as required. The DME is a part time employee. No benefits provided. The DME is paid on a case per diem, cremation pier diem, and assigned hourly and travel resolution published rates. On call pay is $2.50/hr Monday-Friday, $3/hr Saturday & Sunday, and $4.50/hr on holidays. $185 stipend for death investigations. $30 per diem for cremation if no death investigation stipend. $16/hr for transports, trainings, meetings, and conferences.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are illustrative, and the person holding this position may be required to perform other duties of a similar nature or otherwise related to the position.1. Investigate death scenes to determine cause and manner of deaths in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes.2. Examines evidence at the scene to establish an initial assessment of the cause and manner of death as natural, suicide, homicidal, accidental, or undetermined.3. Assists in the identification of the decedent by examining the body and the scene of the death.4. Collects and preserves physical evidence in accordance with the established chain of custody procedures.5. Notifies the next of kin personally or in conjunction with law enforcement, judicial agencies, or pastoral services.6. Supervises the removal of the body from the scene, including transporting to the appropriate post-mortem facility.7. Conducts medical and social history data collection on cases from hospital personnel, health care personnel, families, friends, neighbors, and other sources.8. Testifies in civil and criminal cases on the results of investigations and other expert information9. Prepares and issues death certificates, cremation permits, embalming permits, medical record requests, and other legally binding documents.10. Photograph, fingerprint, collect toxicology samples, gather DNA samples and other forensic evidence from the body.11. Establishes and maintains effective working and public relations with various local, county and state law enforcement agencies, federal officers, correctional officers, county departments and the public.

Contact with the public is generally under stressful conditions and circumstances.Government Relations: Works with other governmental agencies in carrying out their prescribed activities and requirements. Is the secondary resource/contact person for outside agencies.Safety of Others: Requires oversight of public served where there is a moderate exposure to physical hazards. Implements safety standards.Complexity of Duties: Duties and responsibilities are somewhat diversified in nature involving a variety of applications where the employee is responsible for a choice of action within prescribed limits or precedents. Acts independently and uses good judgment to plan work, set priorities, assemble information, and analyze facts regarding individual problems and situations. Determines what action to take within limits of standard practices.III. Working ConditionsEnvironmental: Moderate environmental conditions that frequently impact physical comfort. May require specialized clothing or common personal protective equipment.Physical Demands: The job entails moderate physical demands with some exposure to workplace hazards.
