Crane Operator

SUMMARY: As a Crane Operator, the position is responsible for supporting field operations for Russell Marine, LLC. The Crane Operator will operate a variety of friction or hydraulic lattice boom cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 50 tons to 440 tons in order to support the construction or repair of marine terminals, dock facilities, and/or railroad bridges.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned heavy equipment (friction crane or hydraulic lattice boom cranes) safely and efficiently to lift and move materials, machinery, containers, or cargo.
  • Utilize load charts to ensure lifts are performed within the determined load and radius capabilities of the crane.
  • Perform daily equipment inspection of the crane and identify possible problem areas such as worn cables, worn bands on hoisting mechanisms, broken gears, housing, etc., and advise the foreman of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.
  • Conduct daily maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, oiling, and fueling of assigned equipment.
  • Inspect the rigging before lifting operations and ensure precise load placements.
  • Assist in the assembly and disassembly of the crane and the installation of boom and hoisting cables on the crane.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Must possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be willing/eligible to obtain one upon hire. National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) License for Hydraulic and Friction cranes (Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes – LBC).
  • Experience: 3 years of crane operations within the construction industry.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Knowledge of construction rigging standards, such as the use of slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi-part load blocks, etc. Ability to pass NCCCO Crane Operator Department of Transportation (DOT) physical. Knowledge and skills in mechanical operations, such as maneuvering crane controls and making adjustments. Reads, understands, and uses crane load charts to accurately determine load and radius capabilities of equipment. Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills in English to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification(s): National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Mobile Crane and NCCER Rigger & Signal Person.
  • Experience: Crane operations in the marine construction industry. Previous experience operating cranes on barges.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Familiarity with marine or railroad construction terminology. General knowledge and skills in pile driving. Working knowledge of crane operations specifically concerning Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulations and American National Standards Institute (ANSI).


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes a hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, personal floatation devices (PFD), and/or other protective equipment.
  • The individual frequently works near moving mechanical parts and must be able to adapt to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
  • The individual may be required to work long hours and/or weekends. Additionally, some out-of-town or overnight travel may be required.
  • The individual is required to walk, step, climb, or otherwise move from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • The individual may occasionally be required to stand, stoop, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, or sit for long periods.
  • The individual may be required to work in confined spaces, climb vertical ladders of a height of 6 ft. or greater, and/or elevated heights.
  • The individual may be required to lift objects with a minimum of 10 lbs. and a maximum single-person lift of 50 lbs. This could result in frequent lifting or carrying depending on project needs.
