About The Role
Reporting to the Company Secretary, the Head of Safety leads the company in all aspects of Work Health and Safety (WHS), ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both employees and customers, and leading the Group’s response to critical incidents.
This role involves developing and maintaining comprehensive processes, procedures, and policies to prevent injury and promote a safety culture. Emphasising proactive risk management and continuous improvement, these frameworks are critical for identifying potential hazards and implementing preventative measures. The role also focuses on trend analysis, thorough reporting, and effective training. Further, this position is pivotal in elevating the psychosocial safety of our people, fostering a supportive and mentally healthy work environment. The Head of Safety ensures EVT's compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, highlighting the organisation's commitment to upholding the highest safety standards for everyone involved while elevating the maturity of the safety function.
Tasks Include But Are Not Limited To
Strategic WHS Leadership
- Develop and maintain and continuously improve the overall WHS strategy framework, including WHS policy, training, induction, safety processes, leadership capabilities, wellbeing, and legislative compliance.
- Periodically review WHS policies and make recommendations to ensure best practice approach and compliance with legislation.
- Coach and guide the SLT and other internal and external stakeholders in WHS-related matters.
- Ensure WHS compliance at the regulatory level and in alignment with international best practices and standards. This involves staying abreast of global safety trends and integrating these insights into local practices.
- Engage regularly with the Board and executive leadership, providing strategic insights and updates on the safety function's performance and maturity. Developing a governance model for safety that includes regular review of safety policies, performance metrics, and strategic alignment with EVT objectives.
Incident Response and Resilience Planning
Ensure effective management of the Group’s response to major and critical WHS incidents, co-ordinating with internal stakeholders such as the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, operational leadership, People & Culture and IT, and external stakeholders such as emergency services.Liaise with and support the Group’s People & Culture team on the response to incidents involving the Group’s employees, also Group’s Communications team with internal and external talking points and statements in relation to major and critical incidents.Develop a robust and flexible crisis response framework that goes beyond immediate response to include long-term resilience planning. This should cover a wide range of potential crises, ensuring the organisation is prepared for various scenarios, including global health challenges such as COVID-19.Co-ordinate post-incident investigations and reviews.Donesafe Incident Reporting and Analysis Management
Act as the primary custodian of the Donesafe WHS system, ensuring meticulous incident recording and compliance with reporting requirements.Develop and distribute comprehensive training materials and guides for Donesafe users, facilitating effective and efficient system use across the organisation.Ensure prompt recording of reportable incidents in Donesafe within a targeted 8 hours of the occurrence where possible and complete follow-up reviews within a week to maintain a high response standard.Implement measures to reduce the recurrence of incidents, continuously improving safety practices and outcomes.Enhanced Trend Analysis and Predictive Safety Management
Utilise data analytics and predictive modelling to proactively identify potential risks and high-volume incident types, driving the implementation of remedial actions such as new training, enhanced reporting, and updated standards or controls.Utilise Donesafe data analysis to pinpoint trends, hotspots, and critical areas, thereby developing targeted mitigation programs.Anticipate trends to implement preventive measures and foster a foresight culture in safety management.Collaborate with People & Culture to shape employee surveys that measure safety culture.Proactive action plans and programs of work
Lead the development and implementation of WHS action plans and training in consultation with the People & Culture team, addressing emerging WHS needs.Collaborate with business managers to quickly resolve WHS issues identified through incident reporting.Promote WHS awareness across the business using diverse communication channels like newsletters, intranet, and safety alerts.Regularly update contractor induction procedures and ensure alignment with Australian Standards.Proactively monitor and address feedback from the WHS audit and compliance system.Leverage Technology
Explore the implementation of technology such as AI for comprehensive risk assessment, VR for engaging and realistic safety training simulations, and mobile applications for efficient, real-time safety communication and incident reporting.Focus on harnessing these technological advancements, in partnership with IT, to elevate WHS practices, achieving a more proactive, efficient, and responsive safety management system.Compliance and Reporting Management
Interpret and apply WHS legislation, codes of practice, and industry standards relevant to each state of operation in Australia and New Zealand, ensuring all safety practices meet these regulatory requirements.Prepare and maintain a suite of technical documents, including procedures, reports, and training manuals, aligning them with the applicable WHS legislation and standards.Generate and manage WHS operational reports and dashboards, utilising them to effectively report on, monitor, and manage WHS incidents across EVT.Actively manage and report on all incidents and non-conformances, assisting in identifying and implementing corrective and preventative action plans.Ensure timely completion and dissemination of weekly exception reports, consolidated monthly reports, and comprehensive quarterly reports, providing clear and informative insights into the EVT's WHS performance.Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate is a seasoned safety and security risk management specialist with extensive experience in the hospitality, entertainment, and tourism sectors. You will lead initiatives to enhance safety, security, and business continuity across our Australian and New Zealand operations.
Strong understanding of WHS and risk management statutory compliance, reporting requirements, and governance.Awareness of and interest in state, territory and federal / national WHS legislative requirements in Australia and New Zealand.Experience developing and delivering WHS training for team members at all levels.Expertise in physical and electronic security, including risk assessments, vulnerability analysis, and crisis response.Ability to manage incident response, risk mitigation, reporting, and interact with authorities and insurance claims.Highly motivated and proactive, committed to maintaining and continuously improving WHS practices.Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess risks, identify vulnerabilities, and recommend solutions.High level of accuracy and attention to detail in risk assessments, reports, and recommendations.Qualifications
