Position Summary Position open until filled. Salary range for this position is: $20,155/yr. - $27,913/yr. What you will be working on: Instructing assigned courses (with an emphasis on Coast Guard Approved courses at Qualified Member of the Engineering Department level) in a manner that promotes student engagement and success for a diverse student population; Leading efforts to advance equitable student success in shipboard marine engineering, including closing equity gaps, particularly with regard to race and ethnicity; Engaging in curriculum and program development incorporating current educational theories and research, particularly with regard to serving marginalized and minoritized students; Continuously innovating inclusive and active learning experiences (campus, online, hybrid) in response to assessment and evidence/data analysis; Creating unbiased/race-conscious course assessments and evaluations, assessing data, and engaging in continuous improvement of courses based on that analysis in order to advance student achievement of outcomes, success in subsequent courses, and impact on retention, graduation, and successful transition; Demonstrating cultural humility and intercultural engagement, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity; Creatively designing learning experiences that extend beyond delivering content and assist students in achieving course, program, and degree outcomes; Teaching, advising, and mentoring students holistically from recruitment to transition; Engaging in shared governance, including district-wide efforts to build an antiracist institution focused on action to advance access, retention, and success for our most marginalized and vulnerable students and employees; What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience) Current or previously held a minimum of a National 3rd Assistant Engineer of Steam / Motor / Gas Turbine: https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_40_web.pdf Current or previously held a OICEW or DDE 750 kW/ 1000 HP or More STCW: https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_213_web.pdf Current or previously earned a STCW - Basic Training https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_241_web.pdf An applicant must have a minimum of five years of seagoing service on a marine vessel, with at least three years as a 3rd Assistant Engineer and OICEW or above or 10 years’ experience as a DDE 4000. Experience teaching college level or mentoring adults in the workplace. Ability to teach while meeting the requirements as set forth by USCG approval. Preferred additional qualifications: Advanced degrees and a registered professional engineering license (P.E.) are considered positives. Train the Trainer Certificate or similar training. Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology, or a related field Equivalent Military Experience may be used as a substitute for these requirements Physical Requirements: The Position typically works in an office, classroom, and laboratory environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office. Will teach course up to 6 hours straight, requiring extended standing and walking. Will be required to teach underway aboard the Seattle Maritime Academy training vessel MARITIME INSTRUCTOR. Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; traversing steep shipboard ladders aboard Training Vessel MARITIME INSTRUCTOR and machine shop barge VULCAN; and traversing up and down stairs.
