Position Purpose
Works from engineering drawings, manufacturer’s diagrams, sketches, work order instructions or other information to plan the sequence of welding operations so that enclosed or overlapping parts are welded in proper order to allow maximum accessibility to parts to be welded. Makes layout of primary dimensions of structures, location of cutouts, bevels, and notches. Determines best welding method or type to properly join metals.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilizes electric arc, heliarc, and gas welding equipment for rearrangement, altercation or construction of machinery, equipment, piping and building components.
- Performs such typical maintenance welding operations as inverted overhead welding, welding on vertical surfaces and welding in areas where access is difficult.
- Welds high pressure equipment such as steam lines, air lines, all types of piping and boilers where extreme care must be exercised to prevent leaks and cracks.
- Welds items which are subject to extreme stress and critical tolerances.
- All other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
- Welding certification required.
- Requires 3 years experience.
Essential Functions
Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position: Requires moderate physical effort to handle and position light or average weight material, guide electrode holder or torch accurately along welding lines, draw straight beads and use a wire brush. Requires working from high scaffolding.
Description of Work Environment: Involves disagreeable working conditions due to continuous exposure to heat, sparks, dust, and fumes. Must wear goggles and shield while welding.
Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks: Uses welding machine, shop arithmetic, scale, square, level and surface gauge.
Criticality of Attendance: Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.

Other Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
- Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.

Physical Requirements
- Lift minimum of 50 pound load up from the ground frequently
- Walk six hours per day
- Bend and stoop six hours per day
- Work overhead with minimum 20 pound load
- Push and pull frequently throughout the day
- Walk up/down stairs frequently
- Stand seven hours per day
- Climb ladders and scaffolding
- Wear PPE gear six hours continuously (steel toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves)
- Tolerate extreme cold/heat for three hours continuously
Preferences
- Prior knowledge of NASA site, experienced with working on government installations preferred.
