DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise adult and youth offenders on probation and/or pretrial release through personal contact with offenders and their families. Will meet offenders in their homes and at places of employment or therapy as needed.
- Conduct background investigations.
- Prepare presentence reports and sentencing recommendations. Distribute all necessary and appropriate documents.
- Prepare for and attend Tribal Court proceedings.
- Attend to truant students from school and provide education, issue warnings, and file formal complaints.
- Seek the assistance of community organizations and/or local residents to monitor behavior of adult and youth offenders.
- Plan education and training programs to improve offenders' job skills.
- Arrange for adult and youth offenders to obtain counseling for coping, anger management, drug, alcohol and/or sexual abuse issues.
- Assist the Tribal Court in developing alternative sentencing options, methods and implementation.
- Keep and maintain such records required by law or rule of the Tribal Court.
- Administer oaths and witness execution of documents.
- Gather date and compile various reports to satisfy reporting requirements.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret Tribal Code, Rules of Procedure and/or governmental regulations.
- Communicate directly, orally and in writing, with offenders, family members, community members, attorneys, other Tribal agencies, judges, court staff, and representatives from other jurisdictions.
- Attend continuing education programs and Tribal Probation Academy Basic Training Certificate Program.
- Perform such other duties related to the operation of the Court, other than those specifically performed by a justice, judge, or other court staff.
- Must remain law abiding during employment
- Shall abide by the requirement set forth in Section 5-2307(b)(3) of the Tribal Code which states: Observe and maintain high standards of conduct so that the integrity of the Tribal Code will be preserved.
- Utilize evidence-based practices to implement a trauma informed approach to probation
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology or related field.
- Must have a minimum of two years' work experience in probation, pretrial services, parole, corrections, criminal investigations, substance abuse treatment, social work or counseling.
- Prefer prior experience in a tribal court.
- Prefer prior experience in alternative sentencing methods, i.e., healing-to-wellness or family treatment court.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of all cases and proceedings where required.
- Must be experienced and fluent in the use of computers.
- Must be a motivated, self-starting individual and possess strong organizational skills.
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess an understanding of the legal process, be willing to learn and take direction from Tribal Court judges.
- Must be familiar with the Tribal Code of the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa.
- Must be in good physical and emotional health.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
SUPERVISION:
Direct supervision by the Chief Judge of the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa
SALARY LEVEL:
$52,561.60 - $73,528.00
Applicants will be required to submit to a background check and to a pre-employment drug test.
