The Public Health Aide performs a wide variety of duties to assist the professional staff in areas such as the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program, clinic services, field services, pharmaceutical services, and the Child Health and Disability Prevention Program.

Knowledge of
- The problems, needs, attitudes and behavior patterns of physically, socially, educationally or economically disabled or disadvantaged people
- Purposes and objectives of public health organizations
- Basic types of community resources generally available to the public
- Methods and techniques of interviewing.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants and recipients of health services, employees of the Health Department, other agencies and the general public
- Understand and accept differences in attitudes toward health problems resulting from medical, cultural, financial or other forms of deprivation
- Use community resources to assist clients
- Read, write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance
- Perform basic arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

Special Requirements
Incumbents of positions in this class must be willing to work with persons infected with communicable diseases and to collect samples of human fluids and wastes; i.e., blood, sputum and urine.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SOME POSITIONS IN THE CLASS OF PUBLIC HEALTH AIDE:
Positions in Special Skills classes require the ability to communicate fluently in a language other than English.
When required, these special skills may be used in performing such tasks as the following:
- Interprets and explains the purpose of clinic programs and other available services in a language other than English.
- Conducts intake interviews in a language other than standard English, and translates information obtained into English.
- Acts as a special consultant to other health personnel to help interpret the needs and problems as presented by individuals of different languages and cultural backgrounds.
- Assists staff in the health system by giving advice and information on problems involving relationships with clients and staff of different languages and cultural backgrounds.
- Assists other health personnel by using applicable special skills to help them with the differences of the English language patterns used in different cultural communities or by translating or by interpreting or otherwise using language skills.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
