What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelver (On-Call) position at Sacramento Public Library?
Shelving staff are responsible for maintaining the collection in an organized manner. It is an important job that requires careful attention to detail, a good sense of number and letter patterns, and the ability to follow directions. You may be responsible for checking in materials, organizing materials on carts, and placing them in order on shelves, among other basic library tasks. You will be working the library stacks where you will interact with library patrons, so having good customer service skills will help you be successful in this position and grow within the organization!
Shelvers receive a consistent schedule, but are "on-call" employees. Shelvers must have reliable transportation and feel comfortable utilizing technology such as computers, cellular phones and apps.

The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.)- Sort and shelve books and other library materials alpha/numerically;
- Perform shelf reading and reorganize shelves for correct location of materials and attractive appearance of shelves;
- Act as a representative of Sacramento Public Library to the public;
- Ensure that surfaces are cleared and items and materials are returned to their proper locations after they have been used;
- Pull materials from library generated lists
- Direct customers to the information desk for assistance;
- Maintain positive relationships with other staff and members of the public;
- Attend meetings and participate in various teams as scheduled;
- Check in library materials;
- Participate in outreach activities;
- Retrieving and shelving print and non-print materials;
- Preparing and processing new material for circulation;
- Providing basic assistance to patrons on self-service technology or software;
- Photocopying and messenger work;
- Assisting with set up of library programs and outreach initiatives;
- Preparing the library opening and/or closing by performing such assignments as rearranging/straightening chairs and tables, picking up materials for shelving, and replenishing depleted supplies (e.g. pencils, pads, printer and photocopy paper);
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Basic functions and operations of a public library;
- Alpha and numeric filing systems.
Ability to:
- Utilize alpha and numeric filing systems;
- Utilize a touch screen mobile device;
- Strong attention to detail, speed and accuracy in carrying out duties;
- Maintain shelves and computer workstations in a neat and orderly condition;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to move materials, including transporting materials through the library on hand carts;
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous relationships with colleagues and patrons;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a team and on independent projects;
- Travel throughout assigned region;
- Work minimum of three-hour shifts;
- Customer service experience preferred.
