Role Overview
As the Sacred Music Director, you will have the opportunity to help people grow and serve as disciples through a comprehensive music ministry that leads people to worship God in the Sacred Liturgy. Our parish/school staff works together to serve our amazing parish and school, and you will play a vital role in our team. Your responsibilities will include leading choirs, playing the organ and piano, recruiting and guiding volunteers, and teaching young people at the school to sing and appreciate sacred music. You will also create worship aid and manage the music program's budget.
Ministerial Character
The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish of Sacred Heart Church which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.
Positions employed at Sacred Heart Church help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.
Key Responsibilities
- Liturgical Music Leadership: Produce high-quality liturgical music that reflects the Church’s rich tradition, including Gregorian chant, contemporary, and other sacred choral and instrumental works. Lead music at a minimum of 2 Weekly Sunday Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, and other liturgical celebrations.
- Sacred Music Director at School: Inspire and teach grades K-6 music class two-three days a week. Lead the sacred music for the school Mass on Thursdays at 8:30am. Besides Thursdays, the other two days at the school can be discussed based on the individual’s desires. Direct the Sacred Heart School Christmas Program and have the option to offer piano lessons during the school year and summer for extra income.
- Coordinate Volunteers: Lead choirs and instrumentalists, recruit and guide volunteers, and ensure rehearsals are well-prepared and executed.
- Organ and Piano Accompaniment: Accompany choirs on the organ and piano at liturgies and ensure all instruments are well-maintained.
- Worship Aid Creation: Prepare worship aids for weekly parish and school liturgies as well as special liturgical celebrations.
- Weddings, Quinceañeras, and Funerals: Assist with selecting appropriate music for these special liturgies and provide music for all funerals at Sacred Heart with the help of the instrumentalists and vocalists in the community (Weddings, Funerals, and Quinceañeras will involve additional stipends).
- Administrative Duties: Develop and manage the music program’s budget, collaborate with parish and school staff, and maintain the Parish Music Library.
- As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of Sacred Heart Church in both your professional and personal life.
- Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field, some type of teaching experience with kids or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in playing the piano is required; organ proficiency is strongly desired.
- Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing, committed to the mission and teachings of the Church.
- Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.
- Language Requirement: English (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing), Spanish (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing). Preferred but not required.
