A Brief Overview
Oversees all operation and strategic functions of the Laboratory Department to assure accurate and timely test results. Establishes tools and objectives for the laboratory department and ensures that the laboratory is in compliance with all Medicare and regulatory guidelines.
What you will do
- Manages and directs the laboratory department’s management and financial functions according to established hospital procedures. Prepares and makes recommendations regarding the laboratory department’s operating and capital equipment budget.
- Maintains a current policy and procedure manual for all laboratory functions.
- Ensures the laboratory department complies with all hospital, local, state, and federal OSHA safety regulations and that the safety manual is maintained and updated as needed. Ensures the laboratory department meets the requirements for CLIA accreditation.
- Responsible for the day to day operations of the laboratory staffing, including the work schedule and ensures adequate coverage of the department as determined by patient needs and medical staff requirements.
- Ensures the ongoing education and certification of all laboratory staff.
- Maintains laboratory departmental equipment and prepares and makes recommendations for all needed equipment and supplies.
- Evaluates and validates new testing methods and instrumentation regarding laboratory procedures. Conducts quality assurance activities in the laboratory department.
- Conducts departmental meetings with laboratory staff to ensure the timely communication of relevant department and facility issues.
- Works cooperatively with the pathologist to ensure quality services and with the Infection Control Committee in reducing nosocomial infections.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, developing, training, and retaining employees; planning, assigning, and leading work; appraising performance; rewarding and coaching employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- Bachelor's Transcript showing Medical Laboratory Science degree or
- Bachelor's Transcript showing Medical Technology degree
- MLS - American Medical Technologists (AMT) Upon Hire or
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Upon Hire or
- Medical Technologist (MT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Upon Hire
Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience
- 1-3 years Supervisory experience
