Position Title: Prep Sustainability Assistant (Temp)
Department: Prep
Reports To: Prep Sustainability Coordinator
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): 80% to 100% (depending on hire availability)
Employee Classification: Temporary (June 2025 to July 2026)
Salary: $25.00 - $30.00 hourly
Position Purpose: Provides general support under the direction of the Farm/ Garden Director, maintaining the organic gardens and greenhouse, providing care to the farm animals and supporting the sustainability programs at the lower/middle and high schools.
Specific Expectations for Prep Faculty & Staff: In addition to regular teaching and duties, the following duties and responsibilities are expected as part of the faculty/staff workload: chaperoning, community responsibilities, professional development and trainings, classroom substitution, holding office hours, proctoring exams, admission interviews, and attendance of, or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events (e.g. Director’s Day, open houses, Schools’ annual auction), as required and directed by your supervisor. All employees will be paid appropriately and according to current law. In the case you are required to work outside of your normal work schedule, non-exempt employees will receive overtime pay, as eligible.
Essential Functions
- Performs duties in the gardens, greenhouse and nursery including but not limited to planting, weeding, tending watering and checking irrigation.
- Performs duties at the farm including but not limited to caring for the animals from birth through death (animal husbandry – breeding, feeding, milking, slaughtering, etc.) and performing errands and repairs as assigned.
- Performs duties at the Farm Kitchen including but not limited to baking/cooking food and cleaning/organizing the space.
- Supervises small groups of students involved in the sustainability programs, providing guidance in regards to farm & garden tasks.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Contributes to the community morale maintaining a positive, pleasant demeanor.
Qualifications
- A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the Schools as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based in it. Commitment to equity and inclusion.
- High School diploma or equivalent, required. A college degree related to farming, gardening or sustainability preferred.
- A minimum of three years of relevant experience in all areas (farm, garden, kitchen & supervising students).
- Proven ability to work equally well as a team and individually.
- Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment. Conversant in Spanish preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Regularly operates a variety of power and hand tools and equipment and has strong knowledge of related safety regulations and practices (HCS Safety Data Sheets, etc.).
- Regularly climbs ladders.
- Regularly stoops, bends, crawls, kneels, push, pulls and reaches.
- Ability to travel safely and comfortably across the 64 acre campus
- Be able to regularly and safely manipulate up to 75 lbs. while using proper lifting/moving techniques.
- Regularly uses close and distance vision
- Works in a wide variety of environments as found in all areas of the school and dress appropriately for conditions (safety, cold, heat, inside and outside of buildings)
