Oral Surgery Assistant
Join our team as a Surgical Assistant and play a vital role in supporting both the surgeon and patients during their oral surgery journey. Your focus will be on ensuring oral surgery patients feel at ease and receive remarkable care in a warm and secure environment. As a Surgical Assistant, you will perform a variety of clinical and technical tasks under the guidance of the oral surgeon. From preparing the operatory and equipment to assisting with surgical procedures, perioperative management, and ancillary tasks as assigned.
Essential Duties:
Assist patients by escorting them to treatment rooms and preparing them for care.
Update and maintain patients' medical history in the practice management software.
Review medical history, chief complaint, and treatment plans with patients.
Ensure availability of x-rays, referral letters, and other necessary patient information.
Prepare monitoring equipment and obtain vital signs.
Prepare and complete consent forms, ensuring they are saved to patient accounts.
Prepare IV medications and supplies for sedation if needed.
Assist in administering nitrous oxide to patients.
Assist doctors during surgical procedures by passing instruments, managing airways, and aspirating fluids.
Maintain operative records and update patient charts with treatment details.
Take radiographs and cone beam CT scans as directed by doctors.
Provide pre-op and post-op instructions and counseling to patients.
Make and document follow-up calls to patients as requested.
Address and resolve patient questions and concerns regarding pre-op and post-op care
Indirect Patient Care:
Prepares treatment rooms, including setup, decontamination, and sterilization of instruments.
Maintains cleanliness of x-ray, lab, and sterilization areas.
Manages chemical solutions and monitors supply usage.
Prepares pathology specimens and documentation for pickup.
Monitors lab cases and cleans equipment.
Coordinates pathology specimen pickup and logs biopsies.
Scans pathology results to patient accounts and notifies doctors.
Completes closing duties and assists other staff as needed.
Education / Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 6 months experience in oral surgery, or 1 year of relevant experience in the dental/medical profession.
Special Requirements/Certifications/Licenses
Certified Dental Assistant certificate holder (preferred)
Current x-ray certificate holder (preferred)
Basic Life Support & first aid certificate holder (REQUIRED)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS -preferred)
Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE -preferred)
