What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Copywriter position at Saddleback?
WHAT YOU WILL DO
EDITORIAL
- Develop content that builds trust (e.g. quarterly updates, infographics, testimonies), content that entertains (e.g. enews, social shares, behind-the-scenes, community engagement), content that inspires (e.g. testimonies, stories, promotions, ministry descriptions), and content that converts (e.g. marketing materials, persuasive copy, pastoral messages).
- Write, edit, and proof content for a variety of communication deliverables, including letters, online blogs, devotions, texts, in-app communications, pastoral emails, web copy, print pieces, video scripts, and other marketing materials.
- Collaborate and partner with other teams to develop compelling copy and persuasive content that reaches the target and leads to church health and growth.
- Manage projects, organize tasks, prioritize workload, and communicate project progress with ministry departments.
- Develop and maintain an editorial style guide that can actively equip staff, campuses, and volunteers.
- Perform a variety of additional duties including special projects, assisting the senior pastor’s office, research, corroborating facts, editing, and proofreading.
STORYTELLING
- Advocate for what God is doing in Saddleback Church through the compassionate telling of stories of life change.
- Gather news and information by maintaining relationships with campus pastors and support staff, ministry leaders, staff leaders, and volunteer teams.
- Undertake research into Saddleback history and culture in order to provide context and background information for news updates, communication pieces, and more.
STAFF & VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT
- Create opportunities for Saddleback members to serve their church with their editorial gifts. Recruit, train, and retain volunteers through appreciation and celebration.
WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
- 5 years of professional experience in editorial leadership, copywriting, news writing, editing, journalism, storytelling, publishing, and/or content development.
- An ideal candidate has prior experience in church or para-church communications, or experience in external or in-house agencies in a similar function.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Creative Writing, Communications, PR or other applicable field.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, conceptual thinking, and impeccable writing and grammar skills.
- Strong understanding of marketing and creating copy for a target audience is essential.
- A love of language with the ability to bring clarity and simplicity to a complex message or subject.
- Acceptance of feedback, critique, and revisions are a must.
- Professional knowledge of Google suite needed. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Adobe CS preferred.
- Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, AP Stylebook, or Christian Writer's Manual of Style.
- Ability to work/communicate with all functions of leadership.

Saddleback Church’s pay philosophy is based on internal and external data for pay equity and budgetary considerations for effective stewardship. The estimated pay rate for this position is $72,000-$79,000 per year, depending on experience. We will provide a pay rate within our salary structure that fits a candidate’s qualifications and experience for the job. The posted wage range does not guarantee a specific job offer.
