Description:
PURPOSE:
To provide tutoring services that aid in the successful education of children who are in the SCC
Youth Shelter’s Residential Program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides testing, tutoring, mentoring and other appropriate educational services to shelter youth.
- Sets measurable goals to document student achievement.
- Provides crisis interventions as necessary.
- Keeps appropriate records and files concerning services delivered.
- Maintains a positive, organized and safe learning environment.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Develops sound working relationships with all of the shelter’s staff.
- Prepares required documentation per contract requirements.
- Reports to work at the scheduled time, works as scheduled, and is seldom absent from work.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Possess knowledge of child growth and development.
- Possess knowledge of current educational research.
- Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision is that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn.
- Possess knowledge of at-risk adolescents and homeless youth.
- Ability to work well with youth, families and agencies.
- Have administrative abilities and be detail oriented.
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Possess knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and utilize initiative, ability to be organized and to meet deadlines.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Work to continue personal competency through education, outside literature, seminars, etc.
- Computer experience in a Windows environment, Microsoft Office (Excel, WORD), ability to learn and utilize other software programs.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution. Minimum two years' experience working with similar populations and minimum two years of teaching experience. Teaching Certificate required.
