About Safe Embrace
Safe Embrace is dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic and sexual violence by providing prevention and intervention services. Our programs include emergency shelter, legal advocacy, housing assistance, and crisis intervention. Safe Embrace operates a secure shelter program for individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, offering them the support and resources needed to achieve safety and stability.
Position Overview
The Legal Advocate is a key member of the Crisis Response and Intervention Team and is responsible for providing direct client services, crisis intervention, and legal advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. This role includes assisting victims in understanding legal processes, filing protective orders, and accompanying them to court proceedings.
The Legal Advocate will work at the Protection Order Help Center two days per week and will attend the Legal Clinic at Northern Nevada Legal Aid every other Wednesday. The Legal Advocate is not a lawyer and does not provide legal advice.
Duties and Responsibilities
Legal Advocacy Responsibilities:
- Assist and advocate for victims in filing protective orders.
- Guide victims through the legal system, helping them understand court documents and procedures.
- Accompany victims to court proceedings and provide emotional support.
- Assist victims in applying for crime victim compensation and completing victim impact statements.
- Provide information and referrals for legal resources and services.
- Attend and co-facilitate monthly legal clinics (these may occur outside of regular office hours).
- Offer crisis intervention and case management for shelter residents and transitional housing clients needing legal advocacy.
Outreach Responsibilities:
- Help identify victims in need of services and provide outreach in the community.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate and confidential case files.
- Perform statistical data entry and generate reports for grant and board reporting.
- Attend staff meetings and training courses as required.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, criminal justice, behavioral sciences, or a related field.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.
- Knowledge of the judicial system through prior experience within the legal system.
- Ability to pass a Federal & State criminal background check.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive drug screening.
- Provide at least three recent professional references verifying competency, reliability, and ethical standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively in stressful situations, both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency with standard office software and equipment, including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and email systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking.
- Knowledge of emergency shelter operations and support services.
- Familiarity with social services, victim advocacy programs, or community resources.
