Safe Haven Ministries—a faith based nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking and preventing domestic violence in our community. Safe Haven offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services; confidential emergency shelter for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence and human trafficking; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Development (DOD) serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Safe Haven Ministries (SHM). The DOD is responsible for the leadership of all donor relationship activities including marketing and communication. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Safe Haven Ministries’ visibility, impact, and financial resources while cultivating and growing existing donor relationships. The DOD will also design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.
The DOD will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow Safe Haven Ministries’ operations budget through the solicitation of major gifts, grants, corporate and foundations support, and planned giving. They will also encourage skillful stewardship of these resources.
This person’s primary role will be seeking major gifts and overseeing the expansion and diversification of SHM’s donor base/pipeline and working closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the DOD will work with the CEO and SHM’s Board of Directors to lead and support donor cultivation and solicitation.
Summary of Duties (Essential Functions)
- Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives
- Manage major donors and spend time in person-to-person field meetings with major donors
- Collaborate with the CEO and Development Team in developing SHM’s fundraising strategy in a diversified manner with public, private and foundation resources
- Actively work with the CEO and leadership staff to produce strong grant proposals
- Strategically cultivate donor development events
- Collaborate with Leadership Team on compliance and grant deliverables in coordination and Grants Coordinator
- Have primary responsibility for ensuring the development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach
- Provide appropriate leadership of development staff to ensure successful delivery of fundraising strategies
- Oversee research for funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position SHM ahead of major funding changes or trends
- Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders with the Development Coordinator
- Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
- Lead the partnership with communication partner organization in agency communication strategy
- Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program strategy
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with SHM staff on donor events, church, volunteer, and community partner relationships
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required or Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization preferred; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources)
- Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and cultivate and build long-term relationships
- Willingness and ability to secure donor meetings; regular, dedicated face time with donors is required
- Strong grant-writing skills
- Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan
- Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
- Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail; ability to manage multiple tasks and project simultaneously
- Ability to train and lead development staff
- Ability to productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside SHM
- High energy and passion for SHM’s mission is essential
