Public Health AmeriCorps Program

TL;DR : The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), AmeriCorps, and Safe Passages have joined forces through Public Health AmeriCorps. Together, we are supporting the recruitment, training, and development of the next generation of public health leaders who will be ready to respond to the nation's public health needs. The Public Health Outreach Associate position is an in-person, service-focused position through AmeriCorps with Safe Passages. We partner with local Bay Area communities through outreach, education, and community referral linkages to eliminate barriers related to social services and health in communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic and other social inequities. We have highly competitive positions available with a stipend and education award.

Primary Responsibilities :

The Public Health Outreach Associate / Public Health AmeriCorps Member is integral to the Public Health and Wellness Team within Safe Passages. You will be part of a team that will evaluate, design, present, recommend, and disseminate culturally appropriate information and materials about public and nongovernmental programs and services to the communities of Alameda County. This may include participation in workgroups to prepare materials, conduct in-person community outreach, facilitate healthcare and social service linkages with community members, conduct one-on-one conversations as needed, and promote messaging at public events to present information effectively. You may also work with students grades K-12 to provide age-appropriate curriculum about public health topics such as : mental health, hygiene, exercise / fitness, food security, nutrition, environmental health, LGBTQ and gender / trans-affirming awareness, health education, career pathways, stress management, etc.

Essential Functions :

  • Conduct in-person and telephonic outreach to educate and support targeted communities in improving their health and social needs within Alameda County;
  • Support individuals and families with navigating community resources, including signing up for public benefits, connections to immigration support, securing food and housing, etc.;
  • Provide an age-appropriate curriculum to students in grades K-12 on public health topics such as mental health, hygiene, exercise / fitness, food security, nutrition, environmental health, LGBTQ and gender / trans-affirming awareness, health education, career pathways, stress management, etc.
  • Identify and explore new community locations to conduct outreach activities often overlooked by agencies and systems;
  • Support data collection and evaluation needs for determining intervention effectiveness and to implement data-driven strategies;
  • Maintain detailed records of all outreach events, including the number of individuals contacted, locations served, and events and number of outreach materials distributed; and
  • Participate in regular project and stakeholder meetings to drive cross-sector strategic planning and coordination.
  • Participate in trainings and reflective group supervision to identify and improve professional competencies as a public health professional.

  • The total living allowance ranges between $7,392 and $27,000. The living allowance amount is determined by the slot type and is dispersed bi-monthly throughout the term of service.
  • Members will receive an education award at the end of their service year, ranging between $1,565 and $7,395. The amount is determined by slot type.
  • Eligibility Requirements :

  • Must be at least 17 years old with a high school diploma;
  • Proof of citizenship or legal permanent resident status;
  • Proof of tuberculosis (TB) clearance AND full COVID-19 Vaccine;
  • All members must pass criminal history check, including FBI, DOJ, and NSOPW searches;

Safe Passages AmeriCorps members dedicate 675-1700 hours of service per term in exchange for leadership and career development, and a living allowance supported by our AmeriCorps grant.
