Your Role as a Special Education Teacher
- Provide Classroom Support – Provide a basic core program for special needs students by planning curriculum, lessons, and special education programs. Counsel individuals and groups of students with educational and/or therapeutic challenges. Maintain the physical classroom environment to support student learning.
- Monitor & Track Student Progress – Evaluate student progress based on submitted work, test scores, and observation. Assess student progress through work output and classroom participation, determining goals, objectives, and directions. Prepare report cards, reading records, IEP forms, classroom observation records, and other necessary documentation.
- Support Self-Help Skills – Assist students in making a realistic assessment of their abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals. Support students in developing independence in daily tasks and overall academic success.
- Ensure a Safe Learning Environment – Work with staff to coordinate goals and objectives to create a structured learning environment. Intervene when necessary, using calming strategies and support techniques to help students navigate challenges.
- Collaborate with Teachers & Families – Maintain regular contact with parents and collaborate with staff to support student development. Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements of applicants in the school’s instructional program to ensure students receive the appropriate support and resources.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of relevant teaching experience.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong ability to effectively engage with students, families, and staff.
- Emotional Intelligence: Active listening skills and the ability to support students’ individual needs.
- Classroom Environment: Capacity to foster a positive, professional school atmosphere with patience and adaptability.
