Job Description

Reports To : Assistant Director of Special Education (or designee)

FLSA Status : Non-Exempt

School Classification : Certificated

Pay Schedule : Range 12 ($62.65-$76.68)

Work Schedule : 190 days / 11 months

Location : Onsite and Remote Office

Position Summary : The itinerant visually impaired teacher provides instruction and consultation at the elementary, middle, high school, and / or adult transition level to students who require remedial and specialized assistance in pre-academic, academic, social-emotional, behavioral, adaptive behavior, daily living, pre-vocational, college and career skill areas; and plan, develop, organize and implement comprehensive individualized education programs (IEPs) for students who are visually impaired.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes thorough initial evaluations, additional assessments, and eligibility evaluations that comply with school, state, and federal guidelines and develops legally compliant assessment reports and IEPs
  • Uses comprehensive assessment results to develop an appropriate IEP to accommodate the wide variety of individual needs of each student
  • Conducts educational assessments related to students' access to the academic core curriculum and progress toward meeting instructional academic goals
  • Provides appropriate instruction both individually and in small groups and other special education supports to students whose needs have been identified in an IEP and others requested by a special education administrator
  • Develops, schedules, leads, and participates in the IEP meeting. Consults with various school staff members, parents, and outside service providers regarding student assessments, specialized instruction, accommodations and modifications, equipment, and behavior management techniques; coordinates IEP services as needed
  • Review available medical / vision information pertaining to the student's performance and probable use of vision; obtain updated medical / visionl information and share with parent, teacher, and other appropriate staff
  • Design educational programs to meet individual learning needs within the least restrictive environment
  • Maintain records and reports, and complete frequent progress monitoring that is required by the school, state, and / or federal regulations
  • Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with all other school personnel and parents while maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Participates in staff and program development related to the special methods and approaches of providing special education services
  • Ability to service students in person and / or in-home, if necessary
  • Meets all IEP timelines and school deadlines
  • Maintain equipment and / or materials required for students, including ordering, inventorying, and issuing equipment and materials
  • Identify and select suitable learning materials, equipment, and resources
  • Other Duties

  • Responds to all school-related written correspondence, phone calls, voicemails, and emails within 24 business hours
  • Services students during normal business hours unless prior approval has been extended by the supervisor
  • Documents and reports to the school's management all formal disciplinary actions involving students; support management with addressing and resolving complaints from students and parents in a timely manner; ensuring compliance with the provisions of California Penal Code Section 11166 (Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

    Education :

  • A valid, current, and appropriate California Visually Impaired credential for teaching staff. A copy of the teaching credential is to be provided and kept current.
  • Experience :

  • Two years of successful teaching experience in special education preferred
  • Other Qualifications :

  • State and federal background clearance (LiveScan) to work with students (Ed. Code 44237)
  • No prospective employee can report to work without this clearance being received and Human Resources notifying the immediate supervisor of this clearance

  • Proof of a clear TB test or completed tuberculosis risk assessment questionnaire and certificate of completion by a health care professional dated within the last 60 days (Ed. Code 49406 and AB 1667) upon employment and thereafter updated every four years
  • Knowledge :

  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
  • Computer Literacy : General knowledge of database software, how to use the internet to find information and complete tasks, email usage, order processing systems, spreadsheet software, and word processing software
  • Standardized assessment tools for determining special education eligibility
  • Acquired Skills :

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organization and time-management skills
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills
  • Proficiency in various word processing programs, Special Education Information System (SEIS) and experience using them in a professional capacity
  • Abilities :
